How Wi-Fi dash cam works

The principle of operation of this device is the same, regardless of the manufacturer. First of all, you need to download the mobile application on your smartphone or tablet. Then establish a connection to the network of the car device. Note that in this case, the DVR serves as a wireless network access point, that is, when connected to it, a mobile phone or tablet will not have access to the Internet.

In addition, it is important to know that dash cams with Wi-Fi may not always be able to access the Internet. In this particular case, Wi-Fi is just a way to transfer information (like Bluetooth, but much faster). But some devices can connect to the Internet and save the recorded videos in the cloud service. Then the video can be viewed even remotely.

Popular questions and answers

For help in choosing a DVR with Wi-Fi, Healthy Food Near Me turned to an expert – Alexander Kuroptev, Head of the Spare Parts and Accessories category at Avito Auto.

What to look for when choosing a Wi-Fi dash cam in the first place?

When choosing a dash cam with Wi-Fi, there are a number of main parameters that you should pay attention to:

Shooting quality

Since the main function of the DVR is to capture everything that happens with the car (as well as everything that happens in the cabin, if the DVR is a two-camera one), then first of all you need to make sure that the camera is reliable and the quality of the shooting. In addition, the frame rate must be at least 30 frames per second, otherwise the picture may become blurry or frame skipping. Learn about the quality of shooting in the daytime and at night. High-quality night shooting requires high detail and a frame rate of about 60 frames per second.

Compactness of the device

Safety should be a priority for any driver. The compact model of the DVR with Wi-Fi will not be distracting while driving and provoke emergency situations. Choose the most convenient type of mounting – the DVR can be attached with a magnet or suction cup. If you plan to remove the recorder when leaving the car, the magnetic mount option looks more preferable – it can be removed and put back in a few seconds.

Device memory

The key “trick” of recorders with Wi-Fi is the ability to view and save video from it on your smartphone or tablet by connecting to it wirelessly. When choosing a DVR with Wi-FI, therefore, you can not overpay for additional memory on the device or a flash card for video storage.

Presence / absence of a screen

Since on DVRs with Wi-Fi you can view recordings and make settings on your smartphone, the presence of a display on the DVR itself is an optional option with its pluses and minuses. On the one hand, it is still more convenient to perform some quick settings on the recorder itself, and for this you need a display, on the other hand, its absence allows you to make the device more compact. Decide what is more important to you.

Wi-Fi or GPS: which is better?

A DVR equipped with a GPS sensor associates satellite signals with video recording. The GPS module does not require Internet access. The received data, tied to specific geographic coordinates, is stored on the device’s memory card and allows you to restore where an event occurred. In addition, thanks to GPS, you can superimpose a “speed mark” on the video – you will see how fast you were moving at one time or another. In some cases, this may help you prove that you did not violate the speed limit. If desired, this label can be disabled in the settings.

Wi-Fi is required to connect the recorder with a mobile device (for example, a smartphone) and transfer video files to it, as well as for more convenient settings. Thus, both the built-in Wi-Fi module and the GPS sensor are able to make the DVR more convenient and functional – if the question of price arises, the choice between these functions should be made based on your preferences.

Does the quality of shooting depend on the resolution of the DVR camera?

The higher the resolution of the camera, the more detailed picture you will get when shooting. Full HD (1920×1080 pixels) is the optimal and most common resolution on DVRs. It allows you to distinguish small details at a distance. However, resolution isn’t the only factor that affects the quality of a photo.

Pay attention to the optics of the device. Prefer dash cams with glass lenses, as they transmit light better than plastic ones. Models with a wide-angle lens (from 140 to 170 degrees diagonally) capture neighboring lanes when shooting motion and do not distort the picture.

Also find out which matrix is installed on the DVR. The larger the physical size of the matrix in inches, the better the shooting and color reproduction will be. Large pixels allow you to achieve a detailed and rich picture.

Does the DVR need a built-in battery?

The built-in battery allows you to finish and save the last video recording in case of emergency and/or power failure. At the time of an accident, if there is no built-in battery, recording stops abruptly. Some recorders use removable batteries that can be interchanged with mobile phone models. This can be useful in an emergency situation, for example, if communication is urgently needed and there is no other battery.
