A family doctor in North London reported that 15 percent of the children he treated had atypical symptoms of the Omikron variant. As a result of contracting this type of coronavirus, young patients developed a red rash all over their body.
- In the fourth wave, children are increasingly ill with the coronavirus. One of the reasons is the extremely contagious variant of Omikron – experts point out that it attacks younger and younger people
- Symptoms of the disease in children are similar to those in adults. These are mainly fever, sore throat, cough and muscle pain
- However, there are symptoms more typical of children. One physician noted that children with COVID-19 may develop a rash
- Experts initially estimate that Omikron causes less severe symptoms than Delta

London GP, Dr. David Lloyd noted that there were some differences in symptoms in children infected with the Omikron variant compared to adults. As the medic said in an interview with Sky News, about 15 percent. the people he treated had a red rash all over their body.
- Why is the coronavirus more attacking children now? Two main reasons
Occasionally, only a rash can be evidence of an infection
Lloyd reported that patients had symptoms typical of infection with the new variant – they suffered from fatigue, headaches and loss of appetite. The doctor noted, however, that the symptoms of the Omikron variant do not have to coexist and that sometimes only a rash can be evidence of infection.
The symptoms of the first varieties of the coronavirus were: persistent cough, temperature, and loss of smell and taste.
At the start of the pandemic, it seemed that children were very rarely getting COVID-19. It has been estimated that the coronavirus affects 1-3 percent. children – recalled in an interview for MedTvoiLokony, pediatrician and contagious doctor Lidia Stopyra.
– It quickly turned out otherwise. World data indicated about 10 percent. (these data included only tested children). In countries where children are tested very often, it actually turns out that they constitute 30-50% of infections. all infected – notes Lidia Stopyra.
- Four infants with COVID-19 were taken to the hospital in Legnica. Only one escaped a respirator
Many countries now report the observed increase in the number of coronavirus infections among children. This is e.g. in France, Great Britain, Canada, Australia. Also in the United States, where from the end of June to mid-August the number of hospitalizations of children and adolescents increased almost fivefold, and among children under the age of five, this indicator increased tenfold. As the Kaiser Family Foundation has shown (it deals with, among others, health policy analyzes), in August and September COVID-19 was the sixth leading cause of death among children between the ages of five and 15.
Aneta Górska-Kot, head of the pediatric ward at the Warsaw hospital at Niekłańska Street, said on TVN24 that the fourth wave is the one with the most cases of cases among children. One cannot forget about the acute complications of the coronavirus – mainly the so-called PIMS, which is a direct threat to life.
- Kraska: vaccinations for children aged 5-11 will start on December 16
Preliminary data from South Africa suggest a higher risk of reinfection for those recovered or vaccinated. However, we need more data to draw stronger conclusions. WHO Secretary General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. There is also evidence, he added, that Omikron causes less severe symptoms than Delta, the most common variant today, but it is too early to be sure.
Pfizer and BioNTech have ensured the effectiveness of their vaccine against the Omikron variant. American virologist Angela Rasmussen confirmed this, saying that the first data published by Pfizer and derived from other independent studies are “at least encouraging”.
