Abortion, how does it go?

What is the legal deadline for abortion?

A distinction is made between medical abortion, which can be performed at home, and surgical abortion, also called “suction abortion”, which takes place under medical supervision.

THESurgical abortion can be practiced before the end of the 12th week of pregnancy, that is to say at 14 weeks of amenorrhea. Remember that ovulation for a “normal” cycle occurs two weeks after the first day of your period. This is why there is always a two week delay between the weeks of amenorrhea and the weeks of pregnancy.

THEMedicated abortion is possible until the end of the 5th week of pregnancy, i.e. 7 weeks after the start of the last period.

If the voluntary termination of pregnancy with medication is carried out in a health establishment, this period may extend to 7 weeks of pregnancy, or 9 weeks after the start of the last menstruation.

How many consultations are necessary before the abortion?

Before the actual abortion, you must go to two mandatory consultations performed by a doctor of your choice, as well as an optional consultation.

What is the purpose of the first consultation for abortion?

This is where you will submit your abortion request. You can go to the doctor of your choice. He will explain in detail the different possible techniques and will inform you of the places for its realization.

Note that if the doctor does not himself practiceIVG as part of its conscience clause or because he does not have the adequate material, he has theobligation to refer the patient to other colleagues practicing abortion.

At the end of this consultation, a guide will be given to you as well as a certificate. The doctor will also suggest that you benefit from a psychosocial interview optional. In addition, there is no longer a mandatory reflection period, as it was abolished in March 2015.

What does the optional consultation for abortion consist of?

This interview most often takes place with a marriage counselor in a planning familial. It takes place between the two mandatory consultations. Listen, psychological support but also assistance and advice will be given to you.

Namely

This moment of dialogue is only obligatory for minors, but faced with this difficult decision, it can be comforting for all.

What happens during the second consultation for abortion?

This is a decisive step since it is there that you confirm, in writing, your request forIVG and give the doctor your consent. He will ask you a few medical questions (date of your last period, medical history, allergies, treatment, etc.) and draw up a second certificate. If you have a blood group card, bring it with you. After discussing it with the doctor, you will inform him of your choice concerning the place and the envisaged technique. Sometimes an ultrasound or a blood test is prescribed. If the chosen technique requires general anesthesia, you will need to make an appointment with the anesthesiologist.

Is abortion possible in a minor?

A young girl minor can pmake the decision to terminate the pregnancy alone and decide to keep the secret vis-à-vis his parents. In this case, it will have to choose an adult to accompany him / her and must attend the interview with the marriage counselor. In this case, the intervention is 100% support by Social Security, without advance payment.

Is abortion reimbursed by Social Security?

Since April 2016, abortion has been covered 100% by the Health Insurance, with the aim of facilitating women’s access to voluntary termination of pregnancy.
