A stylist’s guide: how to blow-dry your hair without damaging it

Instructions in nine steps.

London-based stylist Michael Van Clarke, who has worked in the hairdressing industry for more than 25 years, said that the main thing is not to dry your hair or let the ends dry out completely during blow-drying. But what are the main professional secrets of good styling, he revealed to our readers.

Combs and brushes are essential working tools. It is impossible to create good styling with a bad tool. Therefore, the first step is to attend to the purchase of good, quality brushes and combs.

2. Do not use a hot air blower on a hair dryer.

You can often see that even in salons, hair is styled with a round brush and a tapered hairdryer. Or they dry their hair using this attachment, as it directs the air stream well. But, according to the stylist, it is much more harmful to the hair than good, because it excessively concentrates heat and creates the effect of heatstroke, from which the hair structure suffers greatly.

3. Comb your hair immediately after washing

Michael said that immediately after washing, wet hair should be slowly and carefully combed back at an angle of about 45 degrees from the hairline. Before that, they can be sprinkled with a balm that facilitates combing. Combing hair removes hair that has already fallen out and unravels knots, and also massages the root zone.

4. Diffuser as an initial stage of preparation

The hair roots should be lightly dried with a diffuser, which will remove excess moisture and add volume at the roots. But it is important not to dry it completely, the hair should remain a little damp.

After diffuser treatment, seconds count as damp hair dries quickly. The most important part of the hairstyle is the front, starting with the bangs. Wind the front strand onto a round brush or slowly stretch it out while drying with a hairdryer (without a nozzle!), Keeping it at a distance of about 10-12 cm from the hair. It is important not to dry your hair, it is better for it to remain just a little damp and dry out on its own than to be dry.

Grab just as much hair as it can fit on the brush. Then they will be dried evenly and will not overheat. Try to do everything calmly, cleanly and evenly. Don’t fuss. Move the processed strands to the side. Separate the strands with a special comb, and not chaotically with your hands. You need to process the strands from top to bottom along a tangent.

It is important not to dry the ends of the hair, they must dry themselves, however, by the end of styling they will dry out anyway, and if you dry them on purpose, they will very quickly turn into split ends.

8. If you want to re-style your hair, wet it

If something in the styling went wrong, then you should not blow dry your hair, this is the worst thing for the hair. You should wet them if you wish to re-lay them.

When all the strands are processed, turn on the hair dryer on medium power and arrange the final “explosion” of the hair at a safe distance of at least 10-12 cm from the hair, so that all the strands are mixed and the hair lay down as naturally as possible. It will also remove any remaining moisture.
