The pro’s opinion: 4 questions for Laurence Plumey, nutritionist

1 / Can we give cold meals to young children?

It is quite possible but not obligatory. The main thing is to give moisturizing foods and also fiber. Raw vegetables and fruits are packed with vitamins. Children are growing, they need it! For the little ones who have a difficult digestion, we can peel certain fruits and vegetables, or even cook them in a compote or in a fresh smoothie.

2 / Which cheeses to choose to enhance these dishes?

It is best to avoid feta as much as possible for young children as it is a cheese that has a high salt content. For mozzarella, limit the quantities before 3 years, it is a cheese made from raw milk. The intestinal flora of toddlers is not yet sufficiently resistant to the bacteria present in these products. So give preference to cheeses made from pasteurized milk (Emmental, fresh square …)

3 / On the drinks side?

Sodas should be avoided whenever possible. First, because they are not hydrating at all, on the contrary, the large amount of sugars they contain increases the feeling of thirst and dehydrates. They are also very high in calories. If the child wants to vary their tastes, you can give them fresh fruit juices or lemonades which are very rich in vitamins. In all cases, priority is given to water which is the only truly hydrating liquid, at least one liter per day. It is important that the child quench his thirst as often as possible and not wait until he asks for a drink.

4 / Which desserts to choose?

An ice cream or a sorbet during the day, no problem. But it should not be abused on the pretext that it is hot. Be careful not to confuse hydration with pleasure in the mouth. Better a small scoop of ice cream which represents the equivalent of two lumps of sugar than an eskimo which contains 300 calories. The best being the fresh fruit salads.
