You will be surprised: Austria named “Vegetable of the Year 2018”

This is not the usual zucchini or potatoes, not eggplant and not a cucumber. Austrian agricultural producers rightfully named the new amazing tomato-potato hybrid “Vegetable of the Year”.

This plant was born thanks to the efforts of Dutch breeders, and back in 2014, after 4 years full of experiments.

Experts planted tomato shoots on potato seedlings, resulting in a plant with potato tubers located underground and tomato fruits on top of the branches. Since both crops belong to the nightshade family, hybridization was successful.

It was decided to name this unusual vegetable TomTato, according to the initial names of the two parent cultures (“”- tomato,” potato “- potatoes).

Interestingly, TomTato is a versatile plant, it can grow both outdoors and in pots or buckets. Now an unusual hybrid is grown in nurseries for sale, producing about 250-500 cherry tomatoes and about 2 kg of potatoes per season.
