What is the difference between a literary tale and a folk tale: Russian, similarity

Usually mothers read bedtime stories to children. Some of them were invented by the people, others were written by modern authors. Of course, literary tales are different from folk tales. But they also have several things in common.

What is the difference between a literary tale and a folk tale

Children love to listen to fairy tales. In them, good punishes evil. Through fairy tales, children learn to understand the world.

Russian folk tales develop children’s imaginations

But there is a difference between literary and folk tales:

  • In folk tales, the plot is built according to the traditional scheme, and the narrator must adhere to it. A fairy tale written by the author can have an arbitrary version of the story.
  • In a literary tale, the character and appearance of the heroes are described more clearly. The scene and events are endowed with a lot of detail. And the writer has his own relation to each character, and this is noticeable when reading the narrative. Whereas a folk tale reflects the ideals of an entire people.
  • Folk tales appeared in ancient times. They reflect a person’s ideas about good and evil, about moral norms. In the tales of different peoples, their cultural traditions and beliefs are visible. Literary tales appeared much later than folk ones.
  • A folk tale was born among the people. Everyone knew such tales thanks to oral retelling. They were not recorded anywhere. They didn’t have a specific author. And a literary tale is a figment of the imagination of one person, written down on paper.

With the development of writing, the authors began to process folk tales, adding artistic additions to them. So they have survived to this day.

What are the similarities between Russian folk and literary tales

Literary tales repeat folklore, fairy paraphernalia, pagan rituals from folk tales. In addition, these types of fairy tales combine the following features:

  • The authors in their works endow animal characters with human qualities, as was originally used in oral folk art. Proverbs, sayings, common expressions taken from Russian folklore often appear in the author’s fairy tales.
  • Both those and other tales tell about fictional events.
  • Both in those and other tales, the heroes are divided into positive and negative. At the same time, the goodies embody the people’s idea of goodness, justice, and beauty. And negative heroes are the embodiment of evil for a person.
  • In many folk and literary tales, the main character is helped by an animal endowed with supernatural powers.

Many authors, relying on the simple plot of a folk tale, write a brighter and more intricate story.

Folk tales in a creative form reflect the consciousness of people at the time when they were invented. A literary tale, although it continues the cultural traditions of the people, is more an element of adventure or fantasy literature.
