PMI center: organization by departments

Maternal and Child Protection was created in 1945 with the aim of lowering the maternal and infant mortality rate. Each PMI center is under the responsibility of a departmental doctor and the services offered are not identical everywhere, because they depend on the means granted by the General Councils. Often located in social centers, their hours are unfortunately quite limited, with consultations only possible during the week (closed on Saturdays).

PMI Center: a complete medical team

PMI centers rely on doctors (gynecologists, pediatricians and general practitioners), midwives, nurses and nurses. Some receive on-site consultation, while others make home visits.

Depending on the budget of your department and demand, the medical team of these centers can also be made up of a dietitian, a psychologist, an educator of young children, a marriage counselor or a psychomotor therapist. . They collaborate with the many other social services in your department, such as the school health services or the child welfare service.

PMI: family planning actions

PMI played a pioneering role in the distribution of the contraceptive pill. Its centers provide free contraceptives on medical prescription to minors and adults without social security coverage.

They also ensure the interviews prior to theAbortionand screening for sexually transmitted diseases. They can also give advice in the event of domestic and / or conjugal, psychological or physical violence.

PMI Center: monitoring the pregnancy of pregnant women

During your pregnancy, you can choose to do all your prenatal exams in a PMI center, in consultation on the spot or at home thanks to the visits of a midwife. Some centers also offer childbirth preparation sessions and information on social rights and procedures to be carried out.

PMI Center: medical monitoring of children under 6

Your child can benefit from the free medical follow-up provided in PMI centers. Vaccination, screening for disabilities, monitoring of growth and psychomotor development, management of the health record … The medical team will give you advice if you wish on the needs of infants relating to sleep, diet or even fashions. on call.

PMI services also participate in the prevention of child abuse and carry out health checks for 3-4 year olds in kindergarten. In some departments, they also offer group early learning activities and games for children.

Approval of childcare arrangements

PMI services provide medical, technical and financial control of childcare establishments (nurseries, day nurseries, leisure centers, etc.) and childminders.

They also take charge of their training and they are the ones who grant approval (for a renewable period of five years), checking in particular whether the safety committee has passed, whether the premises are suitable and whether the staff are qualified and in sufficient numbers.
