What does the MCHC indicator mean? What role does it play in our body? How to interpret the MCHC result? What does a reduced MCHC level mean? For what reasons might the MCHC go down? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.

What does MCHC below normal mean?

Good day. I am 37 years old, I am a woman. I have recently had a prophylactic morphology, I perform this test on average once a year to be sure that everything is fine with my health. The results were generally okay for me, but I was concerned about the value hidden underneath abbreviation MCHC. I had a little value there, but still below par.

And here comes my question – what does it show MCHC below normal? What does this value even mean? I tried to read a bit about it, but I don’t understand any of it. I wonder why my MCHC morphology was below normal. What could have influenced such a result? Or maybe I ate something earlier? Before the research, I had some stressful situations and I was wondering if it had an influence on this result. If not, can sub-normal MCHC indicate any disease?

Initially, I was supposed to underestimate this result, because the value is not significantly below the norm, but it bothered me. Can I get help with my case?

The doctor explains what MCHC means below normal

Blood morphology it is performed in order to assess the number of morphotic elements of blood and to analyze their characteristics. One of the parameters assessed in morphology is MCHC – average the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood cell. The range of values within the norm is 32-36 g / dl. MCHC indicator together with the MCH parameter (mean blood hemoglobin content) it shows the mean the amount of hemoglobin located in red blood cells.

Hemoglobin is the red blood pigment in the blood cells that transports oxygen. Incorrect causes MCHC and MCH parameter values there may be many. Their value is reduced, for example, in the case of iron deficiency or in a disease such as thalassemia. Iron ions are the basic component of hemoglobin. Therefore, in the case of a deficiency of this element, the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells is impaired.

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder in which the structure of blood cells is disturbed. We observe a reduced hemoglobin content in the blood cell in anemia of chronic diseases. Increasing the value of the MCHC occurs in spherocytosis. It is the most common hereditary haemolytic anemia caused by the abnormal shape of red blood cells, which promotes their destruction.

Normally, erythrocytes take the shape of biconcave discs, and in spherocytosis their structure is spherical. When analyzing the test results, the doctor looks at all the parameters. It doesn’t judge one indicator in isolation from the rest. It happens that one of the parameters slightly exceeds the normal limit and it does not indicate any disease. In the case of irregularities in the results, re-examination is often performed to verify them.

The morphology is assessed based on the clinical picture presented by the patient. Therefore, it is important to take an interview and examine the patient by a doctor. The presented symptoms significantly influence further diagnostics and treatment procedures. In this situation, please consult the test results with your attending physician.

  2. What could be causing high CRP?
  3. What is the blood sugar standard in adults?
