You probably know that avocados have recently been considered the best food for the heart. And this is not a publicity stunt! When you’re craving a snack, you might now opt for a scoop of guacamole. Here are four reasons why you should eat at least a little avocado every day:
1. Decreases risk of cardiovascular disease
Heart disease is considered the #1 killer, affecting millions of adults every year. And this is a reason to include healthy foods in your daily diet. Avocados have been shown to be beneficial for the cardiovascular system due to their low content of saturated fats and high content of unsaturated fats (mainly monounsaturated MUFAs). Excess fat raises cholesterol and triglyceride levels. On the contrary, eating enough unsaturated fats lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol, and improves insulin sensitivity.
In addition, avocados contain a wide range of nutrients, such as potassium and lutein. It contains antioxidants – carotenoids, phenols. These compounds help prevent inflammation and oxidation in the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow.
2. Easier weight loss
By eating fat, we lose weight – who would have thought? Avocado promotes weight loss by creating a feeling of satiety. Avocado gives a feeling of fullness in the stomach and reduces appetite. This is due to the high fiber content – about 14 g per fruit. Studies have shown that eating avocados, which are rich in monosaturated fats, is more beneficial for the heart than a low-fat diet.
3. Reduced risk of cancer
Avocados provide the body with numerous cancer-fighting phytochemicals, including xanthophyll and phenols. A protein compound called glutathione also reduces the risk of oral cancer. Evidence has already been found that proves the positive role of avocados in reducing the risk of breast and prostate cancer. In addition, a substance that has an effect on myeloid leukemic cells has been previously studied. These facts indicate the need for further research.
4. Skin and eyes will be protected from aging
As it turned out, carotenoids from avocados play a big role in protecting our body. Lutein and another substance, zeaxanthin, may reduce age-related vision loss and protect against blindness. These two substances also protect the skin from the oxidative effects of ultraviolet rays, leaving it smooth and healthy. The ease with which our body absorbs carotenoids from avocados compared to other fruits and vegetables speaks in favor of including avocados in our daily diet.
