Useful information about vendace fishing
In Russia, there are two types: European and Siberian vendace. Belongs to the whitefish family. European vendace is a lake and lake-river form of whitefish, Siberian is a river form. European, as a rule, forms residential forms, Siberian – fattens in the sea. In European vendace, the main external difference is considered to be very delicate scales, which easily fall off. European can form dwarf forms and, in general, it is smaller (Onega ripus up to 1 kg); Siberian vendace reaches a weight of 1.3 kg. The presence of subspecies is difficult to determine, and there are regional morphological differences.

Vendace is caught on float, bottom gear, as well as on winter and summer jigging gear and vertical lure.
Catching vendace on float gear
Fish are caught at a great distance from the shore and at fairly large depths. Fish stay in the lower layers of the water. For fishing, you can use both the float and the “running donk”. For fishing, rods with a “running rig” are convenient. The fish is not considered very shy, but coarse gear is not recommended.
Catching vendace with winter gear
The most popular vendace fishing is winter ice fishing. For this, nodding fishing rods are used. Use mormyshki or hooks with a nozzle. Feeding required. For this, chopped meat of mollusks, bloodworms, worms and so on can serve.
Catching vendace on mormyshka in summer
For fishing with nodding tackle, specially equipped fly rods with special nods are used. For fishing, ordinary winter mormyshkas are suitable: a pellet, an ant, and a drop. It is better to use dark models. The nods and weight of mormyshkas are selected according to the fishing conditions.
Baits
The bait is pieces of mollusk meat, invertebrate larvae, including bloodworms, worms, fish fillets. When fishing with baubles, it is also recommended to plant pieces of meat.
Places of fishing and habitat
The fish lives in the waters of the entire Arctic Ocean. In the Pechora region, the distribution range of the European and Siberian vendace is mixed. Siberian vendace is also found in North America. In addition, fish can also be found on some northern islands (Novosibirsk Islands, Kolguev). In the rivers it keeps deep places with a weak current. The behavior of the fish is similar to other whitefish. In lakes, it stays far from the shore, schools of fish move in search of zooplankton accumulations. Large individuals, in lakes, live at great depths, sometimes up to 15 m.
Spawning
It becomes sexually mature at the age of 3-4 years. Anadromous forms spawn in rivers on the current, on the stone-sandy bottom. Spawning takes place in autumn, depending on natural conditions, it can stretch until the beginning of winter. In some reservoirs of Northern Europe, forms with spring spawning are noted. Fish can spawn at great depths.
