Things to try in Colombia

Each country surprises us with its cuisine. And the Colombian coasts are no exception. Colombia has a huge variety of fish, seafood, meats, traditional baked goods and multicomponent fruit and vegetable dishes.

Due to the large number of regions represented in this country, Colombian cuisine is ambiguous and amazing. In addition to the ingredients we are used to, there are also exotic things – ants or guinea pigs, for example. But some dishes will not spoil your appetite and will surely enjoy your taste. What should you definitely try when traveling in Colombia?

Bandeja Paisa (Bandeja Paisa)

This is a very high-calorie dish that will give you energy for the whole day. Colombians mostly eat it at lunchtime. It is made from rice, plantain, avocado, red beans, steak or fried minced meat, sausages, fried pork and fried eggs on top. Bandeha paisa is eaten with arepas corn tortillas.

Арепас (Arepas)

Arepas is a street food of Colombian cuisine, a kind of fast food. Flatbreads are served both separately for a dish, and with various fillings – salty and sweet. Tortillas are baked from corn flour, white cheese and butter with the addition of water and salt. Arepas are very fragrant and cause an acute feeling of hunger – impossible to resist!

Sancocho soup

The love of Colombians for long-term languishing of meat is reflected in this soup. Meat that has been cooked for a long time infuses the other ingredients with aromas and becomes so soft that it melts in your mouth. Chicken, beef and pork are added to this soup, and the dish is boiled down to almost a thick stew. The soup is very spicy and also contains vegetables and a lot of aromatic spices.

Ahiaco

Traditional Colombian soup, which includes four types of potatoes, corn, chicken, and a dish of rice and avocado, which should be poured into ajiaco before use. The soup also includes such a component as guascas, which gives the soup a unique aroma and specific taste. It is impossible to find this ingredient with us, and therefore it will not be possible to cook this famous Colombian soup at home.

Granada mazorka (granada mazorca)

Salad, the main ingredient of which is corn. The corn cob is peeled and then the grains are mixed with meat, cheese, vegetables, herbs and various sauces to taste. Despite the high calorie content, the salad is considered quite healthy due to its rich composition.

Rice with chicken (Arroz con Pollo)

This dish is not uncommon for Latin American countries, and each nation has its own unique recipe. Colombian rice is stewed in chicken broth with pepper and saffron, which gives it a rich, unique taste.

(Empanadas)

Another type of stuffed Colombian tortillas. Empanadas are made from cornmeal and deep-fried. The filling can be beef, chicken, beans, cheese, or vegetables. It is convenient to take such a snack with you when traveling.

Облеас (Wafers)

Colombian dessert obleas is a large waffle with sweet fillings – caramel, chocolate, jam, cheese or coconut. Very sweet and very high in calories, but incredibly tasty!

Baked corn and fried coconut

Colombian street food is also represented by these simple dishes – whole baked corn cob and coconut sticks fried in a hot frying pan. Snacks are sold in many cities in Colombia.

Авена (Oatmeal)

This drink, specific in taste, but very healthy, is another bright representative of Colombia street food. It is made from oatmeal, has a creamy consistency and is served with nut crumbs or cinnamon.

Coca tea

The hot drink is made from coca leaves, which in ancient times were used by the Indians as a remedy for mountain sickness. Coca contains substances that are beneficial to the body, while not addictive. It tastes like herbal and green tea – something in between.
