Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies and is most common in children. Usually it passes after the age of 5, but sometimes persists into adulthood. Avoiding eggs is very difficult as they are found in many products, e.g. pasta, sauces. The consumption of eggs by an allergy sufferer does not always have serious consequences, but problems with it are possible respiratory system, skin, stomach or intestines. The study included 55 children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 who had little chance of curing their allergies. They were given a dose of egg powder each day, corresponding to the beginning 1/3 of the egg. During the first few months, the subjects did not develop any reaction. After 10 months, the subjects were started on a dose of 5 g of egg powder (this corresponded to the value of a whole egg), 55% of the subjects showed no allergic reactions. After 22 months, 10 g of the powder was started, which is the equivalent of two eggs, 75% of the children showed a mild allergic reaction. The research was completed after 24 months. 28% of the children were completely healed. In the examined children, who consumed small amounts of eggs every day for several dozen months, the symptoms of allergy decreased O 75%, and after two years 28% children got rid of egg allergy completely. – It is exactly as we hoped – says prof. Wesley Burks of the UNC Department of Paediatrics. – We predicted such a result, as it was indicated by previous studies, but we were not entirely sure. U almost 1/3 of the children had a permanent change and were no longer allergic to eggs, he adds. The study was published on July 19, 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Prof. Burks cautions that the method is not yet ready for general use. – There are too many side effects that we don’t understand yet. It would be dangerous to use the method alone in family homes. Is needed more research on security – thinks.
