Shattered happiness
Polina was barely 15. Every summer, all teenagers of her age spent in a children’s camp. There Polina met Andrei, who was only a year older than the girl.
Young lovers spent almost all the time together, they always had common topics for conversation, together it was easy and pleasant for them. But the summer came to an end – the young people said goodbye, not having time to exchange addresses (there were no mobile phones yet).
First Love
At home, Polina roared all day, believing that this was the end of her first love. But everything began so beautifully! Imagine her surprise when, two weeks later, Andrei met a girl near her house!
When asked how he managed to find his beloved in a huge city, the guy just smiled mysteriously. This is still a mystery. Young people started dating. Almost every day the guy was waiting for his beloved near the school, and then they walked for a long time along the evening avenues, wandered along the embankments and kissed many, many.
Andrei lived in the suburbs of Novosibirsk and often did not catch the last bus, as a result he got home on foot or by hitchhiking.
The young could no longer imagine life without each other. Sometimes Polina herself came to visit Andrey. The boy’s parents were calm about such visits, because the girl never stayed overnight and from the very beginning made a very good impression on them.
But most of all, the younger sister of her lover, Marinochka, was happy with Paul’s arrival. Polina really fell in love with her, she always joyfully met her future sister-in-law, played with her dolls, and in the evenings she accompanied Andrei to the bus stop.
A failed wedding
So three years passed and soon Andrei was drafted into the army. The young people immediately decided to get married, which they announced to their parents in a solemn atmosphere. Polina’s parents and Andrei’s father were sincerely happy about such an event, but since then the future mother-in-law has seemed to be replaced …
A matchmaking took place, the lovers filed an application with the registry office. The wedding day was set for June 5, and the future newlyweds began to prepare for the wedding. By the way, they did not ask for any help from their parents – since both worked, bought rings themselves, paid for the restaurant.
And then the long-awaited day has come. A wedding is the happiest day in the life of every girl. The guests pulled the road with colored ribbons in anticipation of the ransom, and the groom was late. At that time, cell phones were not yet available.
The time of the wedding was already approaching, but Andrei did not appear. But the strangest thing is that there were no his parents and guests from the groom’s side …
Everyone felt sorry for Polina. After waiting until evening, the guests went home in bewilderment. It is difficult to convey in words the feelings of an abandoned bride. Fields shed tears and screamed in pain and resentment at her failed groom.
The next day, neither Andrei’s parents nor he himself came. Could at least apologize and explain what happened! At first, Polina wanted to go to them herself, but female pride dissuaded the girl from this act.
About a week later, the failed mother-in-law deigned to visit Paulie’s family. She said that Andrei was suddenly taken away by the officers of the military registration and enlistment office. In the distant 1970s, this was quite the case. If there was a shortage at the recruiting office, they could come and pick them up at any time of the day or night – 30 minutes to get ready!
Polina calmed down a little and began to wait for news from the army. But months passed, and Andrei did not write. Only the groom’s mother sometimes ran to Paul’s parents to find out if Andryusha had written anything. She complained that her son did not write anything to her either.
Revenge
One day Andrei’s mother appeared in a good mood and boasted that she had finally received a letter from her son. He wrote that he served well, talked about how he was in school and had absolutely no time to write.
And now he was transferred to the regular unit and he had a lot of free time. There was not a word about Pauline in the letter. The mother-in-law, feigning regret, said:
– It’s still good that the wedding did not take place! Apparently, he doesn’t love you.
Polina was very painful and offended to hear this from the mother of her beloved, but despite this, she continued to wait for Andrei, not understanding why he acted so meanly to her.
A few days later, the former mother-in-law told Polina that she had received a new letter in which Andrei wrote that he was on leave and met a girl whom he plans to marry immediately after demobilization. She still said a lot, but Polya did not hear her anymore – the girl was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
After her mother-in-law left, she fell into a deep depression, refused to eat, and several times tried to commit suicide. No matter how hard her relatives and friends tried to get her out of this state, she could not come to her senses and recover from the betrayal of her beloved.
Romance with Roman
Once, Polina’s close friend, Sveta, met a guy named Sergei, and the girl really liked him. Sergei, without thinking twice, invited a new acquaintance to the cinema for an evening session. And since the guy was not local, Svetlana was afraid to go on a date alone and asked Polina to keep her company.
She, without much enthusiasm, agreed. Young people went to the movies. Sergei accompanied both of them home and invited them to barbecue next Sunday, promising to take Roman’s best friend with him.
It turned out that the guys came from a small town and came to Novosibirsk to enter the medical university. The girls accepted the invitation and at the weekend went with the guys to the river, where they had a great time. They swam, sunbathed, played cards and just talked.
On Monday, friends took the guys to the train and agreed that in September, when they come to study, they will all meet.
Polina gradually came to her senses, but the pain from the betrayal of her lover did not subside. The long-awaited autumn has come. Roman, as promised, returned to the city. On the very first date, Roma, as if as a joke, offered his hand and heart to Polina, and she, in the same way, laughing agreed.
Then everything was like a fog: matchmakers, wedding, guests, tears of parents and the wedding night. Svetlana and Sergey also decided not to delay and played a wedding, about a month later.
Shortly before the celebration, Roma told the bride that his ex-girlfriend did not wait for him from the army and jumped out to marry her classmate. Perhaps it brought two broken hearts together. But, frankly, Polina did not care who to marry, just to take revenge on Andrei.
Undelivered letters
The young people lived very well, soon after the wedding they had a son. Family life finally distracted Polina from the memories of her ex-fiancé. But, once, while Roman was at the lecture, Polina decided to take a walk with her son in the park and quite unexpectedly met with … Andrey!
As it turned out later, he and his younger sister Marina came to the city on business. Seeing Paul, the failed groom rushed at her almost with fists and began to accuse her of the most terrible sins, scolding with the very last words.
He shouted that Polina did not wait for him from the army and jumped out to marry some rogue, slept with everyone in a row and did not write him a single letter. The girl, in turn, told him everything that had accumulated during this time, all the pain that she had to endure, all her hatred for his betrayal …
Eh, mom, mom …
It is not known how all this would have ended if not for Marina. She stood between the former lovers and stated that they were both innocent. And only Andrei’s mother is to blame. Secretly from her father, she bribed a neighbor, a military commissar, so that he would urgently take her son into the army, until he broke his life and married a “slutty” girl.
It turns out that the mother-in-law dreamed of intermarrying with the local rich, who also had a marriageable daughter, and therefore decided to separate their lovers. Having urgently sent her son to the army, she began to intercept letters. I bribed the postman so that she would not put the letters from Andrei into Pauline’s mailbox.
For each undelivered letter, she received from the boy’s mother a gutted domestic chicken, sometimes several dozen eggs or a fatty piece of pork. Moreover, she did not throw away the letters from Andrey – she hid them in the basement.
A few days later Marina brought Pauline proof – an impressive sheaf of letters. The girl was convinced that her lover really wrote to her every day, and he – that Polina did not receive any letters.
All the old grievances disappeared like a hand, hope fluttered in my heart … Marina jumped with happiness and was sincerely glad that the former lovers had made up. She was absolutely indifferent that at home she would receive a big thrashing from her mother, because she ordered her not to say a word to anyone about it.
And how could a seven-year-old child then tell Polina about this? They did not see each other from the very moment Andrei was taken into the army.
Shattered happiness
Young people tried to start all over again, but somehow they did not work. Andrei could not come to terms with the marriage of his former lover, although he understood that she had nothing to do with it. Soon he left the city forever, does not communicate with his mother, only occasionally congratulates him on the holidays.
He maintains contacts only with his father and younger sister. He never forgave his mother for his ruined happiness.
Let’s go back to our days. Today, thanks to cellular communications, Skype, the Internet, such misunderstandings as in this story from people’s lives will not happen again. But there will be completely different stories, more “transparent”, which you will learn about later.
