Scabies
is a skin disease that is very common throughout the world. The disease is parasitic in nature, caused by the scabies mite (Sarcoptes scabiei).
Scabies affected areas
The location of these parasites depends on many factors
- skin structure,
- regeneration speed,
- environmental factors – temperature, air humidity).
As a rule, they appear in places with the thickest stratum corneum – these are the hands, feet, and wrists. It is the thick layer of skin that allows the parasites to hatch long before this area of skin is shed along with them.
Causes of scabies
The scabies mite spreads only among people, the main reason being direct contact with an infected person. Infection is also possible in public places such as trains, hotels, baths, saunas.
Symptoms of scabies
- itchy skin is an immune reaction to parasites, a common and characteristic symptom. It was thanks to him that the Russian name for the disease appeared. The time of appearance of this symptom and its severity are individual
- rashes are the main symptom of the disease; an allergy to the mite itself develops. Clinically, the rash is expressed by scabies.
- papules, vesicles – nonspecific formations,
- in severe cases of damage – urticaria, Quincke’s edema, anaphylatic (allergic) shock.
Diagnosis of scabies
The manifestations of the disease are very diverse, therefore, it is impossible to diagnose scabies only by symptoms; it is necessary to get tested.
Treatment of scabies
Treatment for scabies is primarily aimed at destroying the scabies mite. As a rule, this is the prescription of medications. Treatment will also need to be carried out on family members of the patient with whom he was in contact.
