Dr. Christopher Jahraus, an oncologist at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama (US), told local CBS 42 that he has long wanted to adopt a 9-year-old from Ukraine.
He and his wife Gina already have five children, but he also feels that he can help someone in need. Last year, through the Bridges of Faith organization, Christopher met Sasha — a nine-year-old girl from Ukraine, abandoned by her mother struggling with alcoholism.

Christopher and his wife in 2020 were inspired by a sermon from the Reverend of Bridges of Faith — an organization that helps in adopting orphans from Ukraine. «How can you not want to contribute to saving one kid from misfortune?» — his wife Gina then told the doctor.
Later, several children from Ukraine, with the help of the organization, went to Alabama for a month. It was then that Christopher met little Sasha. During the month they spent together, the boy began to call the Alabama doctor “dad” and told him that he loved him.

When the conflict between Our Country and Ukraine escalated, the boy’s adoption procedure was already underway. Although adoption usually takes anywhere from six months to nine months, now, due to Our Country’s invasion of Ukraine, that time could be significantly extended.
However, the doctor wants to bring Sasha to the United States as soon as possible. “This is my child” — he told local television station CBS 42. He added that “like any father, he will do anything to keep the child safe”.

Christopher discovered that in the orphanage where Sasha had been for a year, he was misdiagnosed as mentally retarded. Since Christopher has pediatric experience, he has determined that Sasha suffers from an attention deficit disorder. He is afraid that if the nine-year-old stays in Ukraine, he will be taken away from the possibility of development due to a wrong diagnosis.
In an interview with People magazine, the man added that it is very difficult for him to watch the events unfold, because little Saszka has a “beautiful, loving, warm heart”. «This is not about sanctions and political maneuvers. It’s about little children. The thought that these little children might fall into the hands of the authorities kills me » — he said sadly.
