A fourth dose of the vaccine will be needed to help fend off the next wave of COVID-19 says Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. He also announced that the company is working on a vaccine that would protect against all variants of COVID-19 for a year.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla on Sunday 13 March in an interview with CBS said that the adoption of the third dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 it is an effective protection that allows to prevent hospitalization and deaths. However, the third dose is not a good protection against the infection itself and does not last long against the Omicron. That’s why he needed a fourth dose for now, he said.

Currently, anyone 12 years of age and older who received a second dose of Pfizer vaccine at least five months ago can receive a third dose. Some moderately or severely immunocompromised people who have received three doses of the vaccine may also receive a fourth dose.

Albert Bourla also added: “Many variants are coming and Omikron was the first to skillfully avoid the immune protection we provide” he said in an interview with CBS. Additionally, Pfizer and Moderna are developing a vaccine to target only the Omikron variant.
