Addiction is the lack of freedom from something.

We can talk about the formation of dependence when some object becomes for a person the only or main source of positive emotion and / or a way to prevent negative emotion. Dependence is to some extent similar to a habit, which is expressed in a person’s attachment to well-known objects of the environment; a person can get used to his favorite chair, jeans, tennis racket, etc. However, addiction, unlike habit, is a hypertrophied and almost irreversible attachment.

In our freedom-oriented society, addiction is viewed primarily as a negative phenomenon. This is not entirely fair: the whole process of upbringing is initially built on the child’s dependence on parents and, moreover, strengthens this dependence. Only when the basic social norms are already invested in the child, adults can begin to form the independence and independence of the child. In total, be careful: addiction is not always bad, addictions can be both positive and negative.

Dependence on the environment of intelligent people is a positive dependence. If a child was brought up in a good family, got used to a certain level of culture, used to read good books and communicate with worthy people, then he will most likely feel very uncomfortable if he has to live in a garbage dump and communicate with urks. Is it bad? Rather, it’s good.

Another thing is addiction to drugs, alcohol, computer games. This is really a disaster, and it is these addictions that attract the attention of psychologists, psychiatrists, and law enforcement officers. Addiction to drugs, alcohol, computer games is, first of all, a serious illness, and it is extremely difficult to treat. Basic principles:

  • The patient must admit that he is sick: an alcoholic, a drug addict, a gamer.
  • Categorically, in no form, do not approach alcohol, drugs and games. “I’ll drink only a little and only dry” — that’s all, this is fraught with another breakdown into a binge.
  • Support of loved ones
  • New deeds and values supported by a new healthy environment.

Less likely to attract attention: love addiction, parental addiction, community or group addiction.

Addiction is not yet a sentence for a certain behavior. For example, a girl has a psychological dependence on sweets, and when she is deprived of her favorite sweet, she experiences mental suffering. But there is a goal — to lose weight, because it’s hard to carry. In this situation, the girl has a choice:

  • do nothing and continue to suffer
  • try to achieve the goal in a different way (for example, increase physical activity)
  • look for ways to reduce your addiction (eat sweets not always, but sometimes; reduce doses of sweets; switch to less sweet foods)

In summary, addiction is simply a life circumstance that makes life (somewhat) more difficult. This is information for reflection and work on yourself. And whether a person will do something in life and work on himself is determined by the presence, structure and content of the personality.

Dependence on parents

The dependence of children on parents is natural in early childhood and decreases with the process of growing up. The task of the parent-educator is to replace the dependence of the growing child with independence, maintaining contact with the child and remaining a respected person, a referent group. To solve the problems of education, the child’s dependence on parents is necessary and useful, and if it is not enough, it must be created.

How to create a dependency? Sometimes the question can be put like this. In life, worldly addiction is most often created through financial leverage, psychological addiction through suggestion, the anchoring of alternating positive and negative emotionally charged events, and simply the work of a habit. What attracts our attention and surrounds us for a long time becomes not just familiar to us, but what we already need.

How to reduce addiction? Some children tie themselves to their parents to the point of addiction, refusing to do anything on their own. If parents want to reduce a child’s addiction, it is helpful to:

  • captivate him with new people, games and activities,
  • to show firmness in maintaining one’s own right to one’s own life. «I have to go, I’ll be back in the evening.»
