Planting a climbing rose in autumn

Climbing roses are suitable for vertical landscaping. To create original compositions, it is necessary to plant seedlings correctly.

These roses take up a lot of space, so it is best to plant them in groups away from other flowers. Choose a well-lit, wind-protected area for planting. At noon, a slight shading of the place is desirable so that the rose does not get sunburn.

Climbing rose shoots can grow up to 2-3,5 m in length over the summer

It is best to plant flowers along the walls of buildings on the south side at a distance of no closer than 1-1,5 m. Roses do not tolerate wetlands. They have taproots that can grow 2 m deep. If groundwater passes near the site, the flower will die. Choose a location with a slight incline.

When planting climbing roses in the fall, their chances of survival are less, since young plants may not have time to get stronger by winter. Plant seedlings in the fall from September to late October. In the spring, plan your planting between mid-April and late May.

Planting a rose:

  1. Dig up the soil in 2 weeks and add peat, humus and a little lime. If the soil is acidic, add dolomite flour.
  2. Dig a hole 50×50 cm in size. Shorten the roots of the seedling to a length of 20-30 cm. This stimulates the formation of a powerful root system. Cover the slices with garden pitch.
  3. Lower the seedling into the hole so that the root collar is 10 cm below the soil surface. Spread the roots, cover with soil and water.

If you are planting several bushes, then leave a distance of 0,5-1 m between them, between rows – 1-2 m. After planting, cover the soil with compost.

Caring for a curly rose in autumn

Caring for the bush after flowering is very important, the possibility of freezing of shoots depends on it. Do the last feeding no later than mid-September.

For the winter, the rose needs to be pruned. Take this procedure at the end of October, when the air temperature reaches -3˚С. Recommendations for pruning are as follows:

  • leave 4-5 of the strongest shoots of this year;
  • remove the branches that grow inside the bush;
  • cut the shoot above the bud, stepping back 4-5 mm from it;
  • remove leaves and dried flowers around the cut;
  • cut out the shoots that grow at the base of the roots.

When the air temperature drops below -5˚С, remove the stems from the supports, lay them on the spruce branches and cover them.

Curly roses will delight you with lush flowering in summer, if you have properly prepared them for winter in the fall. Do not forget to build a support for the bush so that the shoots grow faster.
