People at risk
- People whose family member has Ménière’s disease. There is indeed a genetic predisposition to disease. Some studies indicate that up to 20% of family members can have the disease2.
- People from northern Europe and their descendants are more prone to Ménière’s disease than people of African descent.
- The women, who are up to 3 times more affected than men.
Risk factors
There are no known risk factors for this disease, but it appears that the following may trigger vertigo attacks in people with the disease.
- A time of high emotional stress.
- Great fatigue.
- Changes in barometric pressure (in the mountains, in an airplane, etc.).
- Ingesting certain foods, such as those that are very salty or contain caffeine.
