Nursery or nursery assistant: how to choose?

You might as well know: depending on the region in which you live, you may not have the choice of the type of childcare … Because there are big disparities between departments, cities, urban or rural areas … ‘offers also, between large or mini-structures, independent childminders or in family crèche… “There is no ideal type of childcare. You have to find the right person, mirroring the expectations you have. Anyway, women have the right to have time for themselves, to have a professional life. You have to be persistent, show your motivation, ”says Olivia Hurtebize, author of I am looking for childcare for my child aged 0 to 3 (First editions).

As for nurseries, whether departmental, municipal or company, it doesn’t matter. It is not a question of place, but of nobody. Either the manager empathizes with her team, parents, children, and that’s wonderful. Either she will impose, give orders without relying on the team or bringing up the parents’ comments, and this will not necessarily be ideal. Likewise, for the maternal assistant, everything is a question of personality, of feeling, of confidence that may or may not be established.

So… what to choose? In each area, you can already get your idea of the main advantages and disadvantages of the two formulas.

Salary: what is the difference between a nursery and a nanny? Which is the cheapest?

– Crib :the price depends on the parents’ resources. It is necessary to count between 100 and 600 € monthly, with an average of € 400. The crèche is eligible for the tax credit of up to € 1. The scales change regularly, so do not hesitate to do a simulation on the CAF website (mon-enfant.fr). Know that overall, the collective crèche, whether departmental, municipal or company, is the most economical solution. Also take into account the help that mutuals, the works council of your company can give you … Let us take an example: a couple with 150 child, with an annual income of € 1 (€ 22 monthly) will pay € 000 per month ( € 1 per year). A couple with 800 children, with an annual income of € 195 (€ 1 monthly) will pay € 178 per month (€ 2 per year) for a full-time job and per child. The help of the Caf is directly deducted from the price.

-Maternal assistant : when it is paid directly by the parents, they can receive the Supplement for childcare (Cmg) from the Young Child Care Benefit (Paje). This type of care is also eligible for the tax credit of a maximum amount of € 1. A couple with 150 child, with an annual income of € 1 (€ 22 monthly) will pay € 000 per month, or € 1 per year for full-time work. A couple with 800 children with an annual income of € 390 (€ 3 monthly) will pay, before aid, € 530 per month, or € 2 per year. Knowing that the salary amounts vary a lot depending on the childminders, the city, the hours, the costs … If the childminder is part of a so-called family crèche, managed by the PMI, the prices are almost equivalent to those of the collective nursery.

Hours: what is the advantage between the nursery and the nanny?

– Crib : there are time slots to be observed. If these times are too often exceeded, parents may face scolding. And relations will be more strained with the team. This is explained by the organization of the day in a community. By arriving late, the child may miss the early learning session or the planned activities … Children need benchmarks. And the team has a schedule for meals, changes, daily rhythms… and the closing of the nursery.

-Maternal assistant : the employment contract indicates a number of hours and daily schedules. But here, we are more in the parental relationship. If we arrive at 9:30 am instead of 9 am, one of the babies is sleeping, the other has just arrived, the stakes are not the same. A good childminder is super organized. The course of the day is more modeled on a family mode. When she offers a motor activity, if the room is not tidy on time, it is not so bad. For the evening, if we must be late, we warn! It also depends on the person and the relationships forged over the weeks. Some childminders will agree (or even offer) to make dinner and bathe the child if you arrive late. It is in no way obligatory. So, in compensation, we have to be grateful for the troubleshooting!

Sick baby: What is the best form of childcare?

– Crib : everything depends on the tolerance of the person in charge of the establishment. But most work to accommodate working parents. At least on the first day of the onset of illness so that they have time to organize themselves. For a minor rhinitis, the nursery generally accepts the child for the day. By encouraging parents to go see the doctor the same day. On the other hand, faced with purulent conjunctivitis for example, the case is too contagious for the child to be accepted. In all cases, the crèche can only administer medication on presentation of a prescription.

– Nursery assistant : she is required to have a medical prescription to give medication. In the event of “bobology”, it can work out with the parents. Because, as there are two or three children in addition to yours at home, the situation is more flexible. For example, in the event of otitis, rhino or gastro, the contagion is less obvious than in communities where the little ones nibble on toys, pass them on… There are fewer bacteria at home and children often go out to the park. For immunity, it is better than the closed garden or the somewhat confined playroom of the nursery. It is certain that the first year, the children are less sick in the nursery assistant than in the nursery.

Socialization

– Crib : it has a perfectly adapted, multidisciplinary staff, with a psychologist who regularly observes the children in case of minor concern. For socialization, from 16-18 months, the nursery is ideal. This is the best: we dance, we jump, we play, we paint …

– Nursery assistant : the atmosphere is more cozy, socialization will be smooth, with four children maximum, plus the nursery assistant’s own children. She takes them to the square where they will meet other children, but the welcome remains individual. The advantage of this type of care is especially for the first months, when the toddler needs mothering. In a nursery, if several children cry and a staff member is missing, the child will not be comforted in the same way. Some little ones need friends, others need to be cuddled and carried often in the arms.

Diet

– Crib : barring exceptions, especially a proven allergy, the menu is the same for all children of an age group. Food safety is highly supervised and regulated. The food balance is also respected, but the variety of menus can be a little lacking.

– Nursery assistant : everything depends on his interest, more or less developed, for the culinary art! In general, the food is family friendly. It can take into account any allergies and especially adapt the meal from day to day. For example, if the baby had small intestinal problems the day before, she can prepare a carrot puree, a banana-apple compote the next day. As for the older ones, she can make them participate in the preparation of the meal, and bake a cake to taste it … While it is now prohibited in communities. On the hygiene side, the assistants are trained in food safety (fridge cleanliness, cold chain, etc.) during their training (120 hours compulsory).

Awakening

– Crib : community care is the best of the best! The nursery has a budget to offer a wide range of games, cultural awareness, activities suitable for all ages. Plus occasional speakers who organize storytelling, music workshops, etc. Also, its educational project integrates the awakening of children and an early childhood educator (EJE) supervises daily activities.

– Nursery assistant: in this more family setting, she will awaken the baby as you would: read a book, play with him… If she is part of a family crèche, she can take him regularly to the media library. And meet for half a day, other childminders within the Ram (Relais childminders). The children are then gathered in mini-groups in a room to slide, all kinds of games, under the direction of an educator of young children (EJE).

Security

– Crib : choosing a collective crèche means having the assurance that the child will live in total safety in a regulated structure, where everything is designed so that no accident can occur (no electric wires or accessible sockets, etc.) .

– Nursery assistant: it is like at home, with however a control carried out by the Maternal and Child Protection (PMI) necessary to obtain its approval. The accommodation must comply with the health and safety standards in force. It is also insured for childcare.

With the parents

– Crib : for the parent, it is often reassuring to entrust their baby to a collective structure, with an authority, a reference person who will make the link every day (he slept 10 hours, ate well…). Depending on the establishment, there may be individual follow-up booklets, but in general, this is done orally, when the parent comes to pick up the child. In addition, there is no employer / employee relationship, which can simplify reporting.

– Nursery assistant : the relationship is more emotional, of course. Hence the importance of having established a positive and confident contact. Parents can sometimes fear that the childminder will replace their role. But in fact, she takes over the parental relay, she often forges strong bonds with the child, but she is not there to replace them… and the child knows it well!
