Names in Excel formulas

Create a named range or named constant and use those names in formulas. This way you can make your formulas much easier to understand.

Named Range

To create a named range, follow these steps:

  1. Select a range A1: A4.
  2. On the Advanced tab Formulas (Formulas) click command Define Name (Assign a name).
  3. Enter a name and click OK.Names in Excel formulas

There is a faster way to name a range. To do this, select a range, enter a name in the Name field, and click Enter.

  1. You can now use this named range in formulas. For example, to calculate the sum of prices.Names in Excel formulas

Named constant

To create a named constant, follow these steps:

  1. On the Advanced tab Formulas (Formulas) click Define Name (Assign a name).
  2. Enter a name, enter a value for the constant, and click OK.Names in Excel formulas
  3. Now you can use the name of this constant in formulas.Names in Excel formulas

Note: When changing the value of a constant Tax Rate, Excel automatically updates all formulas that use this name.

Name Manager

To edit and remove specific names, follow these steps:

  1. On the Advanced tab Formulas (Formulas) select Name Manager (name manager).Names in Excel formulas
  2. Choose, for example, Tax Rate and press Edit (Edit) to edit the name. To remove a name, select the button Delete (Delete).Names in Excel formulas
