Medical treatments for hepatitis A

There are no specific medicines to treat overt hepatitis A. Doctors nevertheless recommend applying certain measures to promote healing:

  • First, rest, but that does not necessarily mean long and total bed rest. People who stay physically activate in moderation have been observed to heal about as quickly as others.
  • To drink a lot of water.
  • Eat a diet that does not overwork the liver. In other words: eat foods low in fat, cut out coffee and alcohol.

N.B. : While testing for the virus in the blood is essential in the case of other forms of hepatitis, it has no therapeutic value for hepatitis A. Generally, it is also negative since at the time of tests, the virus has left the blood and can only be detected in the stool.

In case of fulminant hepatitis, which is very rare, a liver transplant may be required to avoid a fatal outcome.
