Pike from the bottom are most often lured with silicone types of baits, foam rubber are less popular, although they work much better. More recently, spinningists have another type of bait – a mandala for pike, this is probably the youngest bait. Some people buy it in a distribution network, but making a mandala with your own hands is not at all difficult.
What is a mandula?
A mandula is a bottom type of bait, which is made of polyurethane foam. They are used for catching pike, pikeperch, perch and other predatory inhabitants of rivers and lakes also respond well to it. There are several varieties of baits, each of which will have its own characteristics.
Often a do-it-yourself mandala is made for pike, the process is not complicated, and everyone has the necessary material at hand. Additionally, for catchability, a bundle of lurex or colored threads is placed in the tail part of the bait, which will not pass by the eyes of the predatory inhabitants of the reservoir.
Initially, the mandula was designed to successfully catch pike perch, the fanged one responded perfectly to such a bait. With minor modifications, the bait has become one of the best options for other predators.
Features of the mandala for pike fishing
The mandula for catching a toothy predator does not differ much from models for pike perch, however, there will still be some features. Design differences are best viewed in the form of a table:
constituents | Features |
number of sections | 2-5 sections |
applied hooks | tees, rarely twins |
mandula dimensions | from 7 cm to 15 cm |
The color scheme can be very different, acid polyurethane foam is usually used in combination with black and white.
The most catchy mandulas for pike have 3 segments, with the first being the largest, the middle one being slightly smaller, and the concluding one having the smallest diameter.
Experienced anglers say that it is best to use two- and three-pieces for a toothy predator, their game will attract the attention of even a lethargic, completely inactive predator at the bottom.
Everyone can assemble a spinning rod for such a bait, the tackle is the simplest, in many respects similar to a jig. It is best to use a braided cord as a base, choose a blank with a dough of 5-7 g, and the coil should be with a spool of at least 2500 with good power performance. The use of a leash is desirable; he will not be able to repay the bait for a tiger.
Where to catch pike on a mandala
This bait for pike among anglers with experience is considered universal, it has proven itself both in reservoirs with stagnant water and in the current.
They usually catch clean, not burrowed places without algae. At the coastal zone and on the edges, the mandula is carried out carefully to avoid hooks.
The subtleties of baiting
Catching pike on a mandala can be mastered even by a beginner, there are no particular difficulties in this process. However, some subtleties and features of wiring in the course and in still water are still worth knowing for everyone.
Pike fishing in the current
Almost everyone who has ever used this bait knows how to catch a pike on a mandala on a river. Here the main indicator will be the sinker, its choice should be taken responsibly:
- you need to choose enough weight, this will allow you to carry out a long cast and catch the bottom sections of the river with good depths. With a quick posting, a bait with a large sinker will be able to attract the attention of a predator, his capture is guaranteed.
- A passive predator will not chase a fast-moving bait, so in the heat you should opt for smaller weights, but not quite light ones.
But at the end of autumn, just before the freeze-up, pike are caught on mandulas and foam rubber for demolition, while the sinkers are selected with a decent weight.
On the course, you need to be able to choose the most effective wiring, which will help to hold the bait and not scare away the predator.
Still water
This bait for pike in still water will not work everywhere, with its help they catch sharp drops in depths in a reservoir, pits, dumps, edges. It will not work to overload the bait, even with a heavy eared sinker, the mandula will play perfectly due to several sections of its body.
Mandala tracking for pike in still water can be different, but usually fast with short pauses.
Do-it-yourself mandala for pike
You do not need to be a master and have some special skills to build a mandala yourself. Everyone can make a bait, but first you need to stock up on tools and materials for production. You will need:
- Polyurethane foam of different colors, use old slippers, bath mats, pieces of children’s soft puzzles.
- Tees of a suitable size, it is better to take several different sizes.
- A small piece of strong steel wire.
How to make a mandala for catching a predator? No one will have any difficulties in the manufacturing process, everything happens quickly and simply. The step-by-step procedure can be described as follows:
- First of all, cylinders of the required size are cut out of pieces of polyurethane foam. Additionally, they are treated with fine sandpaper.
- A through hole is made in each of the segments, the cylinders are pierced exactly in the middle with an awl.
- A piece of wire is inserted into the tail section, at each end of which rings are made into which the tees are attached.
- The next tee is attached to the upper hook, on which the next segment is put on. Next, the mandula is assembled to the end.
Many additionally equip the tail tee with lurex or bright colored threads. So that there are several colors on one segment of the manudla, polyurethane foam sheets are glued together, and only then they begin to cut cylinders of the required size. Otherwise, there are no features of do-it-yourself production, the process is repeated with the above with accuracy.
The mandula for pike is one of the very catchy baits, and a hand-made one will also help save the budget. Such a bait should be in the arsenal of every angler, it is with its help that truly trophy sizes of pike and zander are often caught in different water bodies.
