history of the holiday
The holiday was not always celebrated in September. In 1999, it was proposed to hold it on the last summer Sunday. Moreover, the hand to the glorification of the “sacred Baikal”, as our ancestors called the Siberian lake, was made by the world organization – UNESCO. Abroad, they also understand the importance of preserving the largest fresh water body on Earth for the world ecosystem and the heritage of all mankind. Moreover, Baikal is still one of the favorite places to visit not only by domestic, but also by foreign tourist groups.
In 2008, the deputies of the Irkutsk region changed their minds and moved the main day of honoring their natural brand to the beginning of September. However, even today the celebration of the Day of Baikal on its shores stretches for a whole decade.

As a rule, ecologists who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the Siberian reservoir are honored on Baikal Day. Popular these days were trips of venerable and emerging artists to the shores of Baikal for the purpose of holding creative competitions and plein airs.
