Treatment of a functional cyst:

Once the cyst is detected, if it is a functional cyst, the doctor offers an appointment one to three months later to make sure that it is gone. Estrogen-progestogen therapy has no effect and should not be used to try to get rid of the cyst because it is just as likely to go away on its own without treatment.

Treatment of organic (non-functional) cyst

• Laparoscopic cystectomy. By laparoscopy, the surgeon uses an endoscope to look into the peritoneum and see the cyst. He can remove and operate on the cyst this way. In a postmenopausal woman or in the event of a large cyst, the surgeon may decide to remove the cyst and the ovary, or even the tube.
• Laparotomy surgery (belly opening) is only done when the cyst is suspected to be cancerous or if it is very large. It is sometimes performed when a laparoscopy reveals that it is ovarian cancer.
• The case of endometriosis : in the case where there are many cysts, hormonal treatment putting the ovaries at rest for 6 to 9 months allows to obtain a reduction in the size of the cysts. Only then is an operation performed to remove the cysts.

When a surgeon removes a cyst, by laparoscopy or by open surgery, he systematically sends the sample to the laboratory for analysis.

What if the cyst ruptures?

If the cyst ruptures, bursts, twists, or bleeds, ibuprofen-type pain treatment may be offered. Stronger pain relievers, such as morphine, are sometimes needed. And surgery is needed.
