How bacon started a family squabble

As the popularity of vegetarianism and veganism grows, there are more and more disputes between representatives of different eating patterns.

So, a resident of Australia invited her mother to stay at her place for a while. And all would be fine, but mom and daughter have different food models, different ideas about what is allowed and what is not. And the daughter began to resent the behavior of the parent. The fact is that she herself adheres to a vegan diet, and her mother does not share her lifestyle, and therefore every morning she fries bacon in the kitchen, from which the smell of “dead burnt flesh” lingers in the room for a long time.

In desperation, the daughter described this situation on the Internet, asking users to sympathize with her. People were divided. Many said that mom should not forget that she is not at home and adhere to the rules. Others do not understand: what then should a guest who is not a vegan eat?

Almost all commentators have only one thing in common: they did not express much sympathy for the unfortunate daughter, saying that instead of writing tearful posts on social networks, she should just talk to her parent, because two intelligent adults (especially relatives) are obligatory must come to a compromise.

Vegans and meat eaters: quiet hatred?

Julia Minson of the University of Pennsylvania and Benoit Monin of Stanford University have shown in their research that meat eaters often feel that vegetarians are morally judgmental.

They asked subjects who eat meat to write down any concepts or terms that come to mind in relation to vegetarians. Nearly half of the participants identified the most negative terms as “arrogant”, “unnerving” or “smug”. In conclusion, the psychologists asked the participants to rate the moral assessment vegetarians give to meat-eaters. Those who previously named negative concepts also believed that vegetarians are contemptuous of people who eat meat.

In the second study, psychologists changed roles. Now it was about vegetarians’ perceptions of meat-eaters, they were also asked about their associations. The picture turned out to be even more unattractive than before.

It is sad that even within the same family, people with different ideas about the philosophy of nutrition cannot agree.

How vegans differ from vegetarians

What sets a vegan apart from a vegetarian first and foremost is the uncompromising denial of the whole animal on your plate. Only plants, that is, products of plant origin, are allowed there – on a plate. Accordingly, the indulgences that more liberal-minded vegetarians allow themselves are left behind: dairy products, eggs and even honey, because this is a mockery of bees. The strict principles of veganism extend far beyond the kitchen. No clothes made of fur and leather, a taboo on cosmetics that contain animal ingredients. That is, no matter how ideologically close a vegan and a vegetarian are, their difference is in the degree of rejection of animal products.

Whether you are a raw foodist, meat eater, vegan or vegetarian, do not be aggressive about the eating pattern of someone who does not share your beliefs. And psychologists advise the most implacable relatives or friends to find some kind of dish that will please both. It’s okay if it’s just a dessert.

Recall that earlier we talked about a 100% vegan hotel in Scotland, as well as about the dangers of a raw food diet.
