Home safety for children

Safety rules in the bathroom

1. Watch the bath temperature, it should be 37 ° C. Use a thermometer to make sure. In general, your water heater should be set to a maximum of 50 ° C.

2. Never leave your little one alone in his bath or near water, even if he is installed in a bouncer or a swim ring.

3. For slippery surfaces, consider non-slip shower and bath mats.

4. Do not leave electrical appliances near water (hair dryer, portable electric heater) to avoid any risk of electrocution.

5. Store medications in a locked cabinet. The same goes for sharp objects (razor) or toiletries (perfume in particular).

Safety rules in the kitchen

1. Keep children away from heat sources (oven, gas). The handles of the saucepans must be turned inwards. Preferably use cooking locations close to the wall. For the oven, opt for a protective grid or a “double door” system.

2. Quickly unplug and store household appliances after use: food processors, choppers, electric knives. The ideal: to equip low doors and cupboards with a blocking system to protect dangerous devices.

3. To avoid poisoning, there are two rules: the cold chain and lock up dangerous products. For cleaning products, buy only those that have a safety cap and store them out of reach. Never pour toxic products (bleach bottle, for example) into a food container (water or milk bottle).

4. Store the plastic bags high up to avoid suffocation.

5. Regularly check the gas pipe. A leak can be fatal.

6. Secure your child securely with a safety harness on their high chair. Falling is a frequent accident. And never leave alone.

Safety rules in the living room

1. Avoid placing your furniture under windows because little ones love to climb.

2. Watch out for some plants, they can be poisonous. Between 1 and 4 years old, a child tends to want to put everything in his mouth.

3. Protect the corners of furniture and tables.

4. If you have a fireplace, don’t leave your child alone in the room, or leave a lighter, matches, or fire-starter cubes within reach.

Safety rules in the room

1. As in other rooms, do not leave furniture under the windows to avoid climbing.

2. Large pieces of furniture (cupboards, shelves) must be perfectly fixed to the wall to avoid falling if the child hangs on it.

3. The bed must be up to standard (no more than 7 cm apart for a crib), no duvet, pillow or large soft toys in the bed. The ideal: a fitted sheet, a firm mattress and a sleeping bag, for example. The child should always be lying on his back. The temperature should be constant, around 19 ° C.

4. Check the condition of his toys regularly and choose them appropriate for his age.

5. Do not drop your baby on his changing table, even to grab a bodysuit from the drawer. Falls are frequent and the consequences unfortunately sometimes very serious.

6. Pets should stay outside bedrooms.

Safety rules on the stairs

1. Install gates at the top and bottom of stairs or at least have locks.

2. Do not let your child play on the stairs, there are other more suitable play areas.

3. Teach him to hold the handrail when going up and down and to put on slippers to move around.

Safety rules in the garage and storeroom

1. Put a lock so that your child cannot access these rooms where you often store products that are dangerous for them.

2. Gardening tools should be stored high up. Ditto for ladders and stepladders.

3. If you iron there, always unplug the iron after use. Do not let the wire hang loose. And avoid ironing in his presence.

Safety rules in the garden

1. Protect all bodies of water (barriers). Swimming pool or small pond, children under 6 years old must be under the permanent supervision of an adult.

2. Beware of plants, they are sometimes poisonous (red berries, for example).

3. At barbecue time, always keep children away and watch the direction of the wind. Never use flammable products on a hot barbecue.

4. Avoid using the mower in the presence of your child, even if it is equipped with a safety device.

5. Do not forget the necessary protection (hat, glasses, sunscreen) because the risk of burns and sunstroke exists.

6. Never leave your child alone with a pet.
