This could be a huge breakthrough for patients diagnosed with head and neck cancers (i.e. cancer of the larynx or pharynx). The 54-year-old Graham Booth, who has failed surgery or radiotherapy, will be the first person in the world to receive a vaccine specially composed for him. The success of the therapy may open the way for other cancer patients to successfully treat cancer.
- Briton Graham Booth is now 54 years old. The man has heard the diagnosis five times: it’s cancer
- After surgery, facial reconstruction and radiotherapy, the cancer kept coming back. Booth actually had no other treatment pathways anymore. Except for one
- The case of Graham Booth was put under scrutiny by the makers of the cancer vaccine. It is a preparation individually prepared for Booth. The Briton is to undergo an experiment – he will receive a series of injections that have a chance to relieve him of the disease forever

Graham Booth fights cancer. Cancer keeps coming back
Graham Booth is a 54-year-old father of four. It comes from Great Britain. In 2011, a man was diagnosed with a cancer in the head and neck area (information about the exact location of the cancer has not been made public). At that stage, after the treatment was implemented, the treatment was successful, and Booth, as he says himself, was convinced that the fight was over.
Unfortunately, in 2016, the cancer returned. Doctors started treatment again. For the next three years, Booth lived cancer-free again. In 2019, there was another relapse. 2021 brought two more relapses. In total, Booth has already completed five treatment cycles, including surgery, facial reconstruction and radiation therapy.

A recent diagnosis had cut Booth’s wings. He had lost hope that he would be able to overcome the disease. Now, however, the situation may change, thanks to a completely new solution. It is a cancer vaccine that was specially developed for Booth.
“Last year I felt that the disease was getting worse and there weren’t many options left. Clinical trials have opened a new path and give me some hope that my cancer will never come back. This can open a new path for other people too. I look to the future with hope. A little hope that he will never come back means everything to my family and people around me »- said Booth, quoted by Medical News Today.

Cancer vaccine. It is to be adapted to the patient’s DNA
While the term ‘cancer vaccine’ sounds electrifying, we already have such discoveries in practice, and others are undergoing clinical trials. Perhaps the best known and used vaccine for years is the one against HPV. It is given to girls and women up to the age of 26 to protect them from cervical cancer. However, the human papillomavirus is not only a threat to women – it is also responsible for many head and neck cancers in men. In Poland, the number of cases of oropharyngeal cancer, tonsil, palate or base of the tongue caused by HPV is constantly growing.
– In both men and women, it can lead to the development of head and neck cancers. That is why I am an ardent supporter of HPV vaccination. Not only girls, but also boys. In the case of HPV-dependent cancers, we have a different patient profile. These are young people, over 30, who live healthy, take care of themselves, do not smoke or drink strong alcohol. It happens that I immediately see that the patient who comes to me has HPV-dependent cancer, because he is a young man who did not work on cancer with his lifestyle – said Dr. Dorota Kiprian – oncologist, deputy head and chief editor in an interview with Medonet specialist radiotherapist at the Department of Cancer of the Head and Neck in Warsaw.

The vaccine that Graham Booth will receive is a completely different preparation, however. It has a personalized composition based on DNA. The series of injections the man will receive in the coming months are designed to support his immune system. The idea is that cancer cells cannot develop thanks to an immune response. In simple terms, this means that Booth’s immune system can learn what cancer cells look like and nip them in the bud.
According to the immunooncologist prof. Christian Ottensmeier, we are dealing with a potential breakthrough in the field of cancer treatment.
– Getting to the level when a patient receives this kind of treatment, which was considered science fiction a few years ago – is simply amazing – admitted the specialist.
Graham Booth is the first person in the world to receive the experimental vaccine. However, if all goes well, it won’t be the last. Researchers are already getting ready to extend the study to include more patients.
– We are very grateful to Mr. Booth for agreeing to participate in this clinical trial. It’s great that we can move from the theoretical phase of this study to creating a treatment for real people. We have all waited a long time for this moment to finally come. We believe that this vaccine will really help the patients we treat – added prof. Ottensmeier.
