Diseases that are accompanied by fever (increased temperature) occur quite often. Research shows that approximately 20% of women have a fever at least once during pregnancy.
Effect of high temperature
Exposure to high temperature (hyperthermia) can cause a wide range of abnormalities such as fetal death, miscarriage, premature birth, and varying severity of developmental abnormalities – all this depends on the duration of the fever and the severity of its course.
Causes of fever
Sources of high temperature can be:
- diseases that are accompanied by fever,
- use of a sauna or infrared cabin,
- work under hot production conditions.
The harmful effects of fever occur if the temperature rises by more than 1,5 degrees and this increase lasts at least 8 hours and if the increase is repeated several times (for example, a sauna).
Consequences of high temperature during pregnancy
Temperature during pregnancy, and most importantly during the period when the organs and systems of the fetus are formed, increases the risks of:
- intrauterine death
- central nervous system disorders
- disorders of the anterior abdominal wall,
- occurrence of malformations of the cardiovascular system
- the occurrence of limb defects
- brain development disorders
- developmental disorder of the facial skeleton
