Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD, or Generalized Anxiety) is when you worry and feel anxiety over and over again without any apparent cause. Affected children and adults often worry about what has already happened and about what will happen.

Their anxiety often revolves around whether they will be accepted by the environment, whether they will meet the requirements of family and friends, or whether they will cope at school or at work.

Is the person with GAD aware of their condition?

Children and adolescents with GAD, unlike adults with GAD, often do not realize that their level of anxiety is inadequate to the level of risk. That is why they expect – and sometimes even require – support from adults and their confirmation of their safety (frequent hugging of loved ones).

What are the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder?

The most common symptoms in generalized anxiety include:

• constant fear of what could happen – a misfortune that may affect the sick person or their relatives,

• avoiding going to school, work,

• reporting constant headaches, abdominal pain,

• sleep disorders,

• feeling of permanent fatigue,

• problems with concentration,

• constant feeling of nervousness, irritation.

Diagnosis and treatment of GAD

Generalized anxiety should be diagnosed by a psychologist or psychiatrist (in the case of a child – by a child psychologist or psychiatrist). Help should be sought in Mental Health Clinics (a visit to these centers does not require a referral). Treatment is based on psychotherapy (especially in children) and appropriate pharmacotherapy. Early initiation of treatment helps to alleviate the severity of anxiety and increases the chance of returning to everyday life (which in the case of a child determines the possibility of proper development).
