Everyone knows what a garage or a garage cooperative is, except for the law. According to various estimates, in Our Country there are from 3,5 to 5 million unregistered buildings for cars. What is a garage amnesty

When did the garage amnesty law come into force?

The document has been in development for two years. It was originally supposed to be launched in 2020. However, in the end, the garage amnesty still came into force in 2021. The new rules came into effect on September 1st.

How to register your garage

To qualify for the amnesty, a garage must meet several requirements.

  • A building that stands alone, for example, in a yard or in a garage cooperative. Not temporary, with a foundation. May have common walls, roof with other garages in the same row.
  • Built before December 30, 2004. After that, the new Urban Planning Code came into force and garages, as a rule, were registered.
  • The garage is located on state or municipal land.
  • The land for the garage was provided by an organization such as a cooperative or former employer, or otherwise allocated.

The garage amnesty came into force in 2021, and now the owners need to write an application and attach documents that confirm the right to the building and the land under it. There is no single body that would accept applications in Our Country. In one city, this is the department of land relations under the local administration, somewhere the ministry for state property management or the management of land and property relations. Some allow you to apply at the My Documents MFC, where there are windows of the cadastral chamber, others are waiting only for a face-to-face visit to the office.
