Family allowances: instructions for use

Family allowances: financial assistance granted from 2 children

From the second child, CAF pays family allowances to parents automatically. For this, you must of course report the arrival of the child, complete a file and return it to your CAF if you have never done so before.

When will I receive my benefits? From the month following the birth or reception of the second child, then the third …

Their amount will depend on the number of children you support and your resources.

How are my family allowances calculated?

The monthly amount of family allowances – that is to say the amount of your rights – from January 1 to December 31, 2019, is set according to the declaration of your 2017 income. CAF is responsible for verifying this amount directly with taxes. With the implementation of the withholding tax, this measure will probably change to take more recent income into account.

To benefit from family allowances, there are also other criteria to fulfill:

– reside in France,

– fulfill the conditions for the right to stay for EU nationals,

– for others, provide CAF with a valid residence permit.

Family allowances: how long will I receive them?

As a reminder: family allowances are paid from the calendar month following the birth or reception of a second child, then a 3rd, etc.

Then, when the parents have only one child or no dependent child, these allowances are interrupted at the end of the calendar month preceding this change of situation.

These allowances are cumulative with all other benefits received, and they increase as the child grows.

Family allowances: the case of the alternating residence of children

In the event of separation, the parents keep the benefit of this benefit.. If you have one or more children in alternating residence, it is possible to opt for maintaining or sharing family allowances.

When parents agree, they designate which of the two parents will be the beneficiary for all the benefits. Another possibility: the sharing of family allowances. In this case, the parents designate a beneficiary for the other benefits.

Your choice is valid for at least one year.

When parents disagree, half of family allowances are paid to each. The other benefits are maintained for the parent who is already receiving them.
