Clematis does not bloom: why and what to do
Today, many varieties of clematis have been bred, which bloom only on last year’s shoots. The branches must be left to winter, and in the spring they slightly shorten the tips. If you do not adhere to this rule, then clematis does not bloom. However, the reason for the lack of flowers lies not only in this.
The main reasons why clematis does not bloom
If the bush has never bloomed after planting, then the age of the plant may be the reason. The fact is that some varieties of clematis bloom only after 2-3 years. Often in stores they sell annual seedlings, which, after planting, grow the root system for several years. They bloom later.
Clematis prefer sunny locations, unless otherwise stated in the variety description. Even in partial shade, some species refuse to bloom, stretch out and turn pale. It is important to know the name of the variety before planting.
Basically, this vine blooms on the shoots of the last year, but there are varieties that give buds on a new growth. This feature must be taken into account, because incorrect pruning of the bush will cause the lack of flowers.
Clematis blooms profusely only at a young age. Over the years, the bush does not have enough food, the flowers become smaller. Already a 5-year-old seedling may not bud at all.
What to do if clematis refuses to bloom
If you have precisely determined the reason why there are no flowers, then you can force the plant to tie buds. Follow the recommendations:
- Choose the right landing site. If necessary, transplant the vine to another site.
- Prune the bush, taking into account the characteristics of the variety.
- Replenish nutrient stores on time.
Check the name of the variety before planting. This is necessary for proper care of the vine. Some clematis cannot stand planting in the sun and vice versa. Pruning is an important step. Bushes that bloom on last year’s shoots cannot be cut off in the fall. They are thinned out in the summer after flowering. Varieties that tie buds on a young growth are pruned differently. In autumn, all shoots are cut at a height of 10-15 cm from the soil level.
Do not neglect top dressing, even if the hole was filled according to all the rules during planting. During the active growth of the bush, a lot of energy is consumed, the plant is quickly depleted. In the spring, apply complex fertilizers around the entire perimeter of the trunk circle. Feed with minerals a second time after flowering and pruning.
If the bush is very old, then it is better to update it by sacrificing flowering, or remove it. Shoots can be put on cuttings and rooted
When clematis does not want to bloom, then take a closer look at the plant. It will definitely tell you what to do.
