Cannes – planting and leaving in the open ground
Like all tropical flowers, cannes amaze with their bright colors and exotic appearance. But, before you start growing it, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules of planting and caring for a cana. The homeland of the plant is countries with a tropical and subtropical climate, therefore, appropriate conditions should be created for its full development.
How cannes are planted in open ground
Canna does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature and frost, this should be taken into account when planning the planting time. Experts recommend planting a flower at the end of May, but if there is a threat of return frosts, the planting date can be postponed to a later time.
The cannes planting site should be sunny, well-lit and protected from cold winds.
Cannes planting sequence:
- Prepare planting holes. Their depth should be at least 50 cm, and the distance between them is 50-60 cm.
- Pour a drainage layer on the bottom of the hole, and on top of it a 10-centimeter layer of manure or humus and a layer of soil of the same thickness.
- Then pour well heated water on the hole and plant cannes roots with a sprout. Sprinkle on top with a small layer of soil and mulch its surface.
The rhizome of the plant should be deepened into the ground by at least 6-7 cm. In central Russia, it is recommended to plant cannes by seedlings. In the southern regions, a part of the root with a bud can serve as planting material.
One of the main factors affecting the growth and flowering of the canna is the intensity of watering the plant. It is necessary to ensure that the soil is always moist. Of course, in everything there should be a measure and it should not be allowed to flood the soil. Mulching the soil will maintain the required moisture level.
And also it is necessary to carry out the following activities:
- loosening the soil and cleaning weeds around the flower;
- plant feeding – it is carried out at least 3 times in the spring-summer period, it is recommended to alternate mineral and organic fertilizers;
- timely pruning of wilted flowers – this contributes to an increase in their number and more lush flowering of the bush.
Cannes is ideal for decorating garden paths and creating hedges. Landscape designers are happy to use them to create flower arrangements. A competent combination with other, shorter varieties of flowers will give your site an unforgettable flavor.
