Caceres, Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2015

Cáceres will take over from Vitoria as Spanish Capital of Gastronomy (CEG) next year.

This was decided last Friday by the jury for this award, meeting in Madrid for the final vote, in which the capital of Extremadura prevailed over Huesca, Valencia, Cartagena and Lugo.

The candidacy of the Extremaduran city stands out for the appreciation of the importance and variety of the genuine agri-food product.

Currently in the province of Cáceres there are 8 Protected Denominations of Origin:

  • Iberian ham PDO Dehesa de Extremadura.
  • Cheese La Torta del Casar.
  • Ibores cheese.
  • Gata-Hurdes oil.
  • Paprika.
  • Jerte cherry.
  • Villuercas-Inores Honey.
  • Wine from the Ribera del Guadiana.

It also has two Protected Geographical Indications:

  • Extremadura beef.
  • Lamb of Extremadura (CorderEx)

The strong institutional support achieved by Cáceres’ candidacy has also been taken into consideration by the jury. A support led by the President of Extremadura, José Antonio Monago, by the Council of Tourism of the Board, the Provincial Council and the City Council of Cáceres, and which also has the support of the people and the hospitality and agri-food sectors.

On the other hand, this institutional support has been materialized through an economic contribution already consigned in the General Budgets of the Government of the region for 2015, destined to the promotion of gastronomic tourism. This commitment guarantees the performance of the activities that are scheduled.

The gastronomic appeal of Cáceres is superimposed on its tourist and historical interest. Its medieval quarter is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which is a member of the Network of Jewish Quarters and also a mandatory stop on the Ruta de la Plata.

See you in Caceres!
