Experts explained whether tap water can be drunk, which is best for drinking.

Someone is sure that the most useful water comes from natural sources: if it is a spring, a well or a well, then it’s better not to come up with anything. Others only trust bottled water. Still others believe that an ordinary household filter is enough to provide themselves with clean water. And it’s cheaper, you see. Well, the fourth do not bother and just drink water from the tap – boiled water is also fine. We decided to figure it out: what is right?

Tap water

In the West, it is quite possible to drink water directly from the tap, this does not shock anyone. Experts say that our water supply system is also supplied with water that is quite suitable for drinking: excess chlorination has long been abandoned, checks for the quality and safety of water are carried out non-stop. But how could it be otherwise – there are nuances. The water gets into the system really safe. But anything can pour from the tap – a lot depends on the water pipes.  

“In different areas of the same city, water differs in chemical composition, taste, hardness and other parameters. This is because the water through the pipes does not come from one source of water supply, but from several – wells, reservoirs, rivers. Also, the quality of water depends on the wear and tear of the water supply networks, the materials that are used for laying the water supply system. The quality of water is primarily determined by its safety, and safety is determined by the content of chemicals and microorganisms in the water. It’s just that, first of all, we evaluate water by organoleptic indicators (color, turbidity, smell, taste), but invisible parameters remain behind the scenes. ”   

Boiling can save viruses and bacteria in the water. And from everything else – hardly.

“The correct drinking regimen is important for maintaining energy levels, smooth functioning of all body systems, beauty and youthfulness of the skin. An adult needs to drink 1,5-2 liters of water daily. It is, of course, important to drink high quality, clean water.

Boiled water is the case when you can confidently say that there is no benefit at all from such water. Boiled water is dead. There are few useful minerals in it, but in excess there are deposits of lime, chlorine and salts, as well as metals that negatively affect health. But hot water with a temperature of about 60 degrees is very useful. Two glasses of such water in the morning on an empty stomach start digestion processes, cleanse the intestines and awaken the body. By drinking this water regularly, you can noticeably improve the work of the digestive tract. ” 

Spring water

The water from deep wells is the cleanest. It undergoes natural filtration, passing through different layers of soil.

“Water from deep sources is better protected from external influences – various pollution. Therefore, they are safer than superficial ones. There are other pluses: the water is chemically balanced; retains all its natural properties; enriched with oxygen; it does not undergo chlorination and other chemical interventions, it can be both fresh and mineralized, “- considers Nikolay Dubinin.

Sounds good. But even here there may be some subtleties. Well water can be too hard, high in iron or fluorine – and this is also not useful. Therefore, it must be checked regularly in the laboratory. As for the springs, this is generally a lottery. After all, the composition of spring water can change every day.

“Unfortunately, the current ecological situation negatively affects the benefits of spring water. If earlier natural sources were always attributed to the elixirs of health, now everything has changed, ”says Anastasia Shagarova.

Indeed, it is unlikely that the water will be suitable for drinking if the source is located near a large city. Waste and sewage effluents, negative industrial emissions, human waste, toxins from household waste will inevitably get into it.

“Even water from sources that are far from megacities should be treated with caution. In some cases, the soil is not a natural filter, but a source of toxins, such as heavy metals or arsenic. The quality of spring water must be checked in a laboratory. Only then can you drink it, ”the doctor explains.

Bottle water

“Not a bad choice if you are confident in the manufacturer. Some unscrupulous companies are bottling ordinary water from standpipes, water from the nearest city spring, and even tap water, ”says Anastasia Shagarova.

There are questions about the container. Plastic is still not the most environmentally friendly packaging. And it’s not just about environmental pollution – there is so much plastic around that it is even found in our blood.

As Anastasia Shagarova explains, researchers identify several hazardous elements from plastic:

  • fluoride, an excess of which causes premature aging and reduces immunity;

  • bisphenol A, which is not banned on the territory of the Russian Federation, unlike many states. The chemical can provoke the development of cancer, diabetes, obesity, negatively affects the immune and nervous system;

  • phthalates that inhibit male sexual function.

Of course, a completely deplorable result occurs with a significant accumulation of harmful substances in the body. But, one way or another, they are not good for the body.

 Filtered water

Someone calls such water dead, devoid of nutrients, but forgets a few important things. At first, the most useful water is clean, without impurities. Secondly, only an osmotic filter can completely clean water from all microelements and salts. It is quite expensive but very effective. In addition, most of them are equipped with cartridges that enrich purified water with potassium and magnesium salts – there are almost always not enough of them in the body. Thirdly, the content of trace elements in tap water is so small that their absence will not affect health in any way.

“Filtration is one of the most optimal ways to obtain clean drinking water. You choose the type of filtration yourself, control the filter status and change it. At the same time, water does not lose its properties, does not alkalize and does not accumulate negative substances, “believes Anastasia Shagarova.
