How to choose a facial toner

After the cleansing phase, the natural balance of the skin is disturbed, and it loses moisture in a matter of seconds. Sometimes this leads to unpleasant consequences, such as dryness, irritation and peeling. To keep your skin radiant and youthful for as long as possible, do not ignore the toning step – use a facial toner.

Toner is a well-known product from the Korean facial system. It aims to quickly restore the skin’s moisture level immediately after washing. Unlike the usual facial tonic, the toner has a thicker consistency, thanks to the active moisturizers (hydrants) in its composition. However, with the frequent appearance of new varieties of such a product, the range of possibilities of the toner has expanded significantly. In addition to the effect of moisturizing and softening, toners can now provide other skin needs: cleansing, nutrition, whitening, exfoliation, matting, etc. And they can also be a multifunctional product right away. Choose a face toner according to your skin type and needs.

Types of toners

There are several varieties of toner, due to their texture.

Toner can be applied in two ways. When choosing a method of application, consider the type of skin. On dry and sensitive skin, the product is applied with light movements of the fingertips, and on oily and problematic skin with a cotton pad.

Composition of toners

A classic Korean toner is usually based on standard moisturizing ingredients (hydrants) – glycerin, aloe, hyaluronic acid, and various plant extracts, squalane, vitamins, oils, ceramides (or ceramides) may also be present in its composition.

Freshener and skin toners contain soothing components: flower water, allatoin, plant extracts (chamomile, mallow, peony, etc.) Also, some toners can combine exfoliating and sebum-regulating components for problem skin: AHA- and BHA-acids, Lipohydroxy acid (LHA).

Consider some of the key components that make up Asian toners:

hyaluronic acid – Responsible for skin hydration: fills the skin with moisture and holds it from the inside. This element increases skin tone, promotes better blood circulation.

Aloe vera – An ideal soothing and moisturizing component for sensitive skin prone to peeling, inflammation. Contains a complex of vitamins and minerals, trace elements, polysaccharides. Therefore, the healing and regenerating process is much faster.

Allantoin – a powerful natural antioxidant that has a regenerating and lifting effect. Contained in soybeans, rice husks, sprouted wheat. Effectively works on problem skin of the face – fights inflammation and black spots.

Collagen – Structural protein of “youth” of the skin, which is produced by its cells – fibroblasts. The substance is obtained mainly from the connective tissues of animals and fish. Regular use of collagen helps to strengthen and increase elasticity of the skin, thereby slowing down skin aging.

Chamomile extract – has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, enhancing regeneration processes. At the same time, perfectly tones and moisturizes, relieves puffiness.

Centella Asiatica Extract – a medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory, wound healing and rejuvenating effects. It stimulates collagen synthesis, fights free radicals, thereby weakening the action of UV rays.

Expert Opinion

Irina Koroleva, cosmetologist, expert in the field of hardware cosmetology:

– The toner has the role of quickly restoring the skin’s moisture level after washing. The classic toner restores the ph-skin, moisturizes and soothes, without the cleansing function. The numerous appearance of such products of the new time, significantly blur the boundaries between Korean toners and European tonics. True, Korean toners usually have a more unusual composition. Both tonic and toner will not solve serious skin problems: dryness, dullness, and will not remove inflammatory elements. An experienced cosmetologist will help you cope with this task by diagnosing the condition of the skin, selecting the necessary home care and other recommendations.

What is the difference between toner and tonic?

Toner is a skin care product developed by Korean manufacturers. Unlike tonic, it has a dense gel-like consistency and is applied to the skin with your hands. Classic Asian toner does not contain alcohol, but only components for nutrition and moisture retention. Glycerin, which is part of the toner, promotes the penetration of moisture into the deeper layers of the skin and helps to retain it. Therefore, there may be a feeling of a film on the face.

Tonic is also a lotion, the function of which is cleansing the skin of makeup residues and other impurities, as well as restoring ph-balance after washing. Due to its liquid texture, it is applied to the face with a cotton pad or tissue paper. In daily care, tonic is selected according to skin type.

Summarizing the above, let’s summarize the main differences between the two products. The main function of toner and tonic for the face remains unchanged – skin toning, i.e. restoration of ph-balance after the cleansing stage. But the composition of both products will vary significantly: the basis for the toner is hydrants (moisturizers), for the tonic – water. Classic toners never contain alcohol.

How to use?

By incorporating a toner into your skin care routine, you complete the main step of skin cleansing, toning and moisturizing. Visible changes from the use of toner will be visible after 2 weeks – fresher clear skin. I recommend using toner immediately after contact with hard water.

To whom does it suit?

Toner will be an excellent addition to facial skin care for both dry, sensitive skin and oily, problematic. Problem skin of the face simply needs moisturizing, as increased greasiness (fat content) is a sign of dehydration.
