A healthy weight starts with breakfast

A healthy weight starts with breakfast

August 31, 2011 – Eating breakfast at home, even if it consists of just a piece of fruit caught on the fly, would help maintain a healthy weight.

This is one of the observations drawn from a survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center with 1 people in the United States.

This survey, which looked at healthy eating habits, looked in particular at two habits associated with weight control: eating breakfast and avoiding soft drinks.

On the day of the survey, a majority of respondents said they eat in the morning. In total, 78 percent of them had eaten, and most had had breakfast at home (84%). Conversely, 22% of participants had simply skipped the first meal of the day. In general, the body mass index of people who ate at home was lower than those who ate out or who did not eat at all.

Hearty or frugal breakfast?

Should you eat copiously in the morning to better control your appetite the rest of the day? In light of recent studies, this is not so certain. In fact, if there is one recommendation that holds, it is to choose foods that contain nutrients and listen for signals of hunger and fullness.

Thus, skipping breakfast in order to lose weight turns out to be a bad strategy since hunger (and sugar cravings!) Will catch up with us later by making us fall for the first satiating thing in sight: donut, giant muffin, cookies, etc. Even more, according to the Mayo Clinic, prolonging the fast after a night’s sleep increases insulin secretion (the role of which is to push sugar into cells in order to produce energy). Suddenly, the body is more inclined to store fat, with the direct consequence of weight gain.

As for food choices, several studies have noted that breakfast is often an opportunity to consume foods belonging to neglected food groups: fruits and vegetables and dairy products. These foods, along with whole grains, are also associated with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. It also seems that eating healthy in the morning predisposes you to eat well the rest of the day.
