7 ways to use orange zest wisely

Remember the fairy tale “Veshki and Roots”, the whole point of which was that you had to know what was edible in a product – an inch or a spine? So, in the case of an orange, both the heroes of this tale – both the Bear and the Man – would be happy: it contains everything you need.

The orange contains a large amount of vitamin C, which increases the body’s defenses and reduces the risk of colds. There is definitely an orange! But the zest of an orange is no less useful than its pulp. There are many ways to use it.

1. Whitening paste

Add ground crusts to your usual paste – you get a medicinal composition. Regular brushing of teeth with such a paste will strengthen them, reduce sensitivity and remove yellow plaque. If you are too lazy to grind the zest, simply rub your teeth with the inside of a fresh orange peel.

2. Facial scrub

Such a scrub will deeply cleanse the skin, remove excess oil, improve complexion, lighten age spots, and reduce signs of skin aging.

Preparation:

  • Grind dry crusts on a coffee grinder (finely, but not into dust).
  • Mix with yogurt or sour cream (if the skin is dry). The consistency should be pasty.
  • Apply to the skin gently along the massage lines, in a circular motion.
  • In order to achieve a brightening effect and even out complexion, leave for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm and cool water.

3. Moth remedy

Place dry crusts in a sachet-type bag and hang in the cabinet. The mole won’t bother you now.

4. Flavoring flavor

Our mothers and grandmothers also added ground orange peels to baked goods or drinks, which gave them a pleasant taste and aroma.

5. Candied fruits

This is a great stand-alone tea treat. Candied fruits can also be added to baked goods or used to decorate cakes.

Preparation:

  • Pour fresh orange skins with cold water for 2 days, changing the water twice a day.
  • Drain the water, pour in fresh, bring to a boil, boil for 15 minutes.
  • Turn off, drain water, rinse with cold water. Repeat 3 times.
  • Cut the cooked crusts into strips 0,5 cm wide. Make syrup. Approximately 1,5-2 cups of sugar per 1 cup of water.
  • Bring the syrup to a boil and dip the prepared crusts into it.
  • Cook until the crusts are transparent.
  • At the end of cooking, add a little citric acid.
  • Discard in a colander, drain.
  • Roll the candied fruits in sugar and dry on parchment in the oven.

6. Home freshener

The advantages of such a natural air freshener are obvious: it is cheap, natural and helps not only to spread a pleasant aroma, but also to humidify the air.

Preparation:

  • Take two orange peels, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, a spoonful of ground cloves, and 3 cinnamon sticks.
  • Fill a pot with water and two tablespoons of vinegar.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients, bring to a boil and cook until the mixture begins to give off flavor.

7. Cleaning agent

Citrus peels are antibacterial, making them ideal for household cleaning products. The high citric acid content kills bacteria and mold, and also removes soap stains and mineral deposits.

Preparation:

  • Put citrus peels in a jar, pour them with vinegar
  • Close and leave for a week
  • Then pour the resulting citrus vinegar into a spray bottle and use it as an all-purpose cleaner.
