14 week of pregnancy from conception
For four months you have been carrying a new life under your heart. What happens to the baby at the 14th week of pregnancy from conception and how does the expectant mother feel? We deal with gynecologists

What happens to the baby at 14 weeks

At the 14th week of conception, the baby has already formed facial muscles, the child knows how to build funny faces, he winks, frowns, opens and closes his mouth.

The proportions of his body are becoming closer to the usual: the legs are lengthening compared to the handles, and the head no longer looks so big against the background of the whole body. He already knows how to make grasping movements and strives to catch either a pen, or a leg, or an umbilical cord.

The whole baby at this time is covered with a gentle, barely noticeable fluff, which will disappear by the time of birth.

The stomach, intestines and gallbladder begin to perform their usual functions, moreover, the first contents appear in the baby’s intestines – the so-called meconium.

By the 14th week of pregnancy from conception, all fetal systems, except for the respiratory one, are already working in the usual mode, and its chest performs movements, rehearsing exhalations and inhalations. The kidneys are also included in the work, they begin to excrete urine into the amniotic fluid.

Fetal ultrasound

“At this time, an ultrasound will tell you exactly the gender of the unborn baby, the doctor will be able to examine the entire anatomy (to identify gross defects and signs of some pathologies), measure the bones and circumferences of the head and abdomen, and also report on the position of the placenta and the structure of the umbilical cord,” explains gynecologist Dinara Berezina.

With an ultrasound of the fetus at the 14th week of pregnancy, the baby’s movements can be seen on the monitor screen: he moves, the boy sucks, his facial expression changes. However, if there are no movements, you should not be upset. You may notice the first movements in the next month.

It is already possible to understand by the genitals whether you will have a son or a daughter, although this is not always possible with an ultrasound examination.

Photo life

At 14 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of an avocado. It is actively growing. The length of the child is already about 16 cm, and weighs about 120 g. In the next three weeks, growth will accelerate even more – the baby will grow twice.

From the photo of the abdomen at the 14th week of pregnancy, you can determine that the girl is expecting a baby. This is especially true for thin women, and just slender girls. By virtue of the constitution, their tummy is noticeable earlier. The same goes for moms with narrow hips. Rounded shapes can be noticeable even if the baby promises to be large.

However, some women manage to look exactly the same as before pregnancy, however, after 3-4 weeks, nature will still take its toll and the tummy will become obvious.

What happens to mom at 14 weeks

At the 14th week of pregnancy from conception, the mother feels great, although this is not the case for all women. Nausea and frequent urge to go to the toilet usually do not bother at this time, but sometimes it is different.

Of the positive changes: a woman looks fresher than usual, as the volume of blood increases, it rushes to the skin and it begins to literally “shine”. Because of this, the hair grows faster, and the structure is much better. If this is not the first child for mom, then she can feel the first movements of the baby, which also cannot but rejoice.

Inconvenience is sometimes experienced by those mothers who begin to hastily put on weight. Some are already gaining 5-7 kg by this time, but it’s better not to rush like that, 2-3 kg is enough for 14 weeks. In a pregnant woman, moles and freckles may darken, skin pigmentation may increase, for example, around the nipples and on the abdomen.

At this time, bleeding from the nose and gums may occur, as well as fungal infections, such as thrush, may become more active. With such problems, it is better to rush to the doctor, because there is a high risk of infecting the baby with a fungus. Trouble often delivers progesterone, because of which the intestines relax and constipation, heartburn, bloating and hemorrhoids occur.

What sensations can you experience in 14 week

At the 14th week of pregnancy, a woman experiences new pleasant (and not too) sensations:

  • her well-being improves as her hormones finally calm down;
  • joyful excitement arises, especially if the movements of the baby in the womb are already felt;
  • appetite increases, and it will grow in the near future, as the baby himself is actively growing;
  • if before that the breast did not increase, then it will start now or in the next couple of weeks;
  • the waist is no longer so thin, the tummy is gradually rounded and the usual trousers may not fit on the mother;
  • there may be inconvenience due to a shift in the center of gravity and weight gain;
  • some people find it uncomfortable to sleep on their back, they have to lie on their side.

Monthly

The only norm for this period is the usual light discharge without a strong odor, if you notice blood on the linen, this is not good.

Doctors recommend immediately reporting the problem to your gynecologist, but it is better to play it safe and call an ambulance. It is necessary to go to the hospital if the spotting is quite plentiful, if there are blood clots in them, and if the mother feels very weak at the same time.

Allocations by type of menstruation can be a sign of:

  • placenta previa or abruption;
  • miscarriage;
  • trauma;
  • inflammation;
  • tumors.

Dangers can be recognized if there are several alarming symptoms at once, for example, severe abdominal pain, uterine tone that does not weaken, and, in fact, bleeding.

If timely measures are taken, then there is every chance of safely maintaining pregnancy and giving birth to a healthy baby.

Stomach ache

– At this time, short-term pulling pains in the iliac regions are possible (this is how the ligaments are stretched), – explains the gynecologist Dinara Berezina. – However, not all pains are normal, a woman should be alerted by cramping pains, “petrification” and a feeling of tightness in the lower abdomen.

Whether there is a threat or not, you can understand by the following signs:

  • it’s not scary if the pain is only on one side;
  • if the uterus is calm (if it hardens, we call the hospital);
  • if the pain does not have a periodicity (if it occurs with a frequency of 10-15 minutes, we call the hospital).

In some cases, the cause of abdominal pain is problems with the gastrointestinal tract. Constipation, heartburn, bloating constantly haunt expectant mothers and can ruin life.

Brown discharge

The discharge turns brown due to the presence of blood in it. Normally, it should not be there, so the first thing we do is make an appointment with a doctor.

It is not worth panicking because of scanty brownish discharge at such a time, today medicine successfully copes with many problems during pregnancy, whether it is placenta previa or the threat of miscarriage. If you do not let things take their course, there is every chance to avoid problems and successfully bring the child to the due date.

Popular questions and answers

Is it possible to visit a sauna or bath during pregnancy?

There are important periods in the development of the child, and if at such a moment the mother’s body temperature remains elevated for some time, this can harm the baby. The risk in this case is unreasonable, so doctors advise to refrain from visiting baths and saunas. The same goes for the solarium. It is not known for certain how ultraviolet radiation affects the unborn baby, but it is better to play it safe and wait a little with such procedures.

What is the norm of blood glucose in a pregnant woman?

Glucose norms for pregnant women are lower than for non-pregnant women – up to 5,1 mmol / l. This is explained by the fact that it is necessary to protect the developing pancreas of the child from excessive levels of sugar in the mother’s blood.

If a woman’s fasting blood glucose level is 5,1 or higher, the gynecologist must refer her to an endocrinologist who will prescribe a diet without easily digestible carbohydrates, or even prescribe insulin.

What is oligohydramnios and why does it occur?

Amniotic fluid is produced approximately 12 days after conception. At first, it consists of water that the expectant mother gives, and by 20 weeks it is replaced by the urine of the baby herself. The volume of amniotic fluid grows throughout almost the entire period of pregnancy, and somewhere at 34-36 weeks it reaches a maximum – a liter.

To understand that there is little amniotic fluid, doctors can use the following parameters: amniotic fluid index – IAF (normal 5-25 cm), depth of the vertical pocket – HVK (normal 2-8 cm). Thus, if the AFI is less than 5 cm, and the HVK is less than two, then the mother has oligohydramnios.

Why is this happening? There may be several reasons:

• congenital defects of the kidneys, lungs;

• chromosomal pathology;

• maternal drug use;

• fetal growth retardation;

• fetal conflict in multiple pregnancies;

• on the part of the mother (arterial hypertension, diabetes, preeclampsia);

• problems with the placenta (thrombosis, heart attack).

Oligohydramnios is a serious problem during the first 6 months of pregnancy. It is during this period that the risk of congenital malformations, abortion, premature birth and loss of a child is high.

Is it possible to have sex?

If the pregnancy is going well, why not? Sex is a natural part of life and you should not deny yourself it for fear of harming your child. Any doctor will assure you that an active sex life will only benefit.

Of course, sex is not shown to all pregnant women. Those who have had miscarriages or have a threat of abortion, placenta previa, spotting from the genital tract will have to refrain.

It is not recommended to indulge in pleasures with an untested partner, because STIs are sometimes difficult and time-consuming to treat, and there are many restrictions for pregnant women in terms of choosing medicines.

What to do if the temperature rises?

– If you have a fever, you need to consult a therapist. You should not worry, many drugs are allowed in the second trimester (they will not harm the expectant mother and baby). But in no case should this issue be left unattended, high temperature can be harmful, says obstetrician-gynecologist Dinara Berezina.

After a visit to the doctor, the next important step for the expectant mother is to lie down in bed and ensure herself rest and drink plenty of water. There are no effective drugs for viruses of the ARVI group that are allowed for pregnant women, but they are treated by our immunity, you just need to relax and not interfere with it.

How to bring down the temperature? Paracetamol is allowed, but preferably once. And the temperature is less than 38 is better not to knock down at all.

What to do if it pulls the lower abdomen?

Drawing pains in the abdomen during pregnancy are absolutely normal. The main thing is to make sure that the uterus is calm and does not harden, and the pain itself does not come in attacks. If it’s just discomfort, doctors advise lying down and breathing from your belly. This promotes relaxation and calmness.

How to eat right?

In the second trimester, the body’s expenses for the growth and development of the fetus increase sharply, hence the need for a more high-calorie diet. It is believed that a pregnant woman should consume about 2500 kilocalories per day.

A woman should eat at least 95 grams of protein per day, and half of it should be obtained from animal products: meat, eggs, fish. Fat in the daily diet should be at least 80 grams, of which at least 40 grams are vegetable. 350 grams of carbohydrates is the norm for a woman at 14 weeks of pregnancy. It is better to give the advantage to cereals, pasta, which contain complex carbohydrates.

But it is better to forget about salt for a while. Its excess in the diet will make you drink more, and this will lead to swelling. A lot of salt is found in semi-finished products, canned food and factory sausages, leave them on store shelves.
