While working in Excel, sometimes it becomes necessary to write text not horizontally, but vertically. Let’s see how this can be done in the program.
Change text direction to vertical
Vertical recording can be done in several ways. Let’s analyze each of them separately.
Method 1: Cell Formatting
The most common option is to change the direction of the text through cell formatting.
- We right-click on the cell inside which we want to make vertical text. In the context menu that appears, select the item “Cell Format”.
- In the window that opens, switch to the tab “Alignment”. Here, on the right side, the settings are presented (block “Orientation”), with which you can change the way the text is written (the standard is the horizontal direction, i.e. 0 degrees). We can:
- click the button “Text” – in this case, the characters will be arranged vertically one below the other, but with the usual spelling.
- rotate the text by specifying any angle of inclination in a special field, but within the framework of the task, a value equal to 90 degrees (with a plus or minus sign) is required. Or instead, you can move the red control point to the appropriate position with the left mouse button pressed (we cling to the point itself or the word “Inscription”).
- Press when ready OK.
- As a result, the text in the selected cell became vertical.
Note: Formatting can be done for a single cell or for a range of cells. To do this, they must first be selected in any convenient way, for example, by holding down the left mouse button. Then we call the context menu by right-clicking inside the range and go to the formatting window.
Alternative methods
Get in the window “Cell Format” it is possible in another way:
- Press the key combination Ctrl + 1.
- Being in the tab “Home” click on the slanted down arrow in the lower right corner of the tool group “Alignment”.
Method 2: Using the Tools on the Ribbon
In this case, you do not need to enter a special window, everything is made easier.
- Select a cell or range of cells. Contribution “Home” click on the button “Orientation”.
- In the drop-down list of options, select the desired command: “Vertical Text” or “Rotate text up/down”.
- Depending on the option selected, the text in the selected cells is converted.
Conclusion
So there are two ways in Excel to make text vertical. The first one involves launching the formatting window and making adjustments in it, the second one is simpler and for its implementation you only need to know where to find the right tool on the program ribbon.
