Why you can’t tickle pregnant women and children
Hands off! As much as you want to make them jump, dodge and laugh, it is better to wait with exuberant fun.
First, let’s understand what tickling is. Doctors say that laughter in response to the fact that you beat a person by the heels or by the sides is an unconscious reaction of the body that we inherited from our distant ancestors and for some reason did not disappear in the process of evolution. It’s an automatic brain reaction, like sneezing when your nose is itching. It seems to be nothing wrong. But why is it still not worth tickling a baby? It’s impossible to resist, he’s uchi-ways, how sweet!
Reason 1: subconscious fear
A person, regardless of gender, age and social status, will laugh at the tickle. This is an uncontrollable reaction in response to an action that our body subconsciously perceives as a threat. But at the same time, we laugh, even if the sensations of tickling we terribly do not like. For babies, tickling is often painful. Pain and fear – what good is there?
Reason 2: fear of physical contact
Once upon a time tickling was used as a form of torture – a historical fact. Seriously, do you want someone close to experience all these unpleasant sensations? If you nevertheless regularly chase the baby with your persistent tickling, there is a great risk that he will be afraid of touch at all. What if you just hide behind the fact that you want to help put on a shirt or dry after bathing, but in fact you are going to tickle? So it will jump up when someone touches it.
Reason 3: even unborn babies don’t like tickling
Babies in the womb don’t like a lot of things: spicy food, for example, or when mom is sad. They also don’t like it when mom laughs a lot. After all, it turns out that their “apartment” shudders, as in an earthquake. Sheer stress, and nothing pleasant. And if we remember that at the same time my mother feels akin to medieval torture, then in general, horror.
Yes, the kid is often unable to squeeze out of himself “enough”. And we do not always listen, because we have so much fun when the baby laughs! But this laughter is actually almost a cry. The child quickly gets tired of such energy-consuming fun. And do not be surprised if, after 5-10 minutes of laughter, your child beats on the floor in hysterics, which cannot be relieved by anything, he will sob until he falls asleep.
Reason 5: lack of understanding of bodily autonomy
There is such a psychological dependence: the child tries to run away, asks you to stop, but to no avail. The tickling continues. This gives rise to the idea in the baby that you, an adult, have the right to do whatever you want with him, even if he is very opposed. And this applies not only to tickling, but also to corporal punishment: you cannot beat anyone, but you can, as a child. But in our present world it is very important to teach the baby that no one has the right to touch him if he does not want to. Otherwise, when he grows up, the child will not know what to do in a situation when someone encroaches on his boundaries like this, physically.
In general, there is nothing wrong with tickling. Many people like to be squeezed. The main thing is to know when to stop and listen to a person, even a tiny one. If he asks you to stop, stop. If the baby is very tiny and cannot tell you anything, then it is better to give him a massage. And do the pregnant wife too, she will like it.
