Why are shrimp so expensive?
First of all, the size of the shrimp affects the price of the product. The difference in the price of raw materials is noticeable when comparing the size of the shrimp 50/70 and 90/120. In the first package there are 1-50 shrimps per 70 kg, and in the second – 90-120 pieces. This means that in a bag marked 50/70, the shrimp are larger.
The price of shrimp also includes:
- processing of raw materials;
- transportation;
- customs duty;
- importer’s markup;
- supermarket markup.
The shrimp needs to be caught and prepared for transportation. To prevent the product from spoiling on the road, it is boiled in sea water, frozen and glazed.
To avoid damage to the goods during transportation, the transport must be equipped with equipment that maintains the temperature regime. These processes are costly.
An important role in the price of shrimp is also the distance to the sea. The closer the sea is, the less costs are spent on transportation of goods.
