White, brown, vanilla: what sugar is made of now

Types of sugar

Mainly granulated sugar, refined sugar and brown sugar are found on store shelves.

  • White sugar

Common sugar is obtained from the processing of sugar cane or sugar beet.

  • refined

To get refined sugar, you need to dissolve granulated sugar in water. Then it is additionally cleaned from impurities, that is, refined. Thus, it is obtained with a high sucrose content.

  • Sugar

Refined sugar syrup is used to produce refined sugar. Then it is crystallized depending on the dimensions required for production. It is divided into several subspecies: very large, large, medium and small.

  • Vanilla sugar

Used for baking. It is a regular sugar flavored with an artificial vanilla substitute.

  • Cane sugar

Unrefined (undergoing industrial processing with minimal preservation of trace elements) cane sugar is obtained from cane syrup. Thanks to molasses (a by-product of sugar production in the form of molasses, which includes various useful substances), it acquires a golden brown color and a specific taste. There is also still white refined (no useful trace elements) and unrefined (has undergone minimal industrial processing).

  • Klenovый Sahar

It is a traditional product made in Canada from sugar maple. In early spring, holes are drilled in the trees, from which sap begins to flow. Then it is evaporated and crystallized.

  • Palm sugar

It is obtained in Asia from the cuts of the flower cobs of palm trees. The resulting juice is evaporated and crystallized.
