Which modeling clay to choose for Baby?

The ingredients that go into the composition of plasticine are generally kept secret. From time to time, only statements such as “Contains wheat”, “Not intended for eating” appear on the packaging. Apart from wheat (which can cause allergies), we would however like to know what substances our little treasures are likely to lick or nibble. The rule therefore: do not give him anything! It is also strongly recommended to always be with a child who handles plasticine in order to prevent any risk of ingestion and of wrongdoing (in particular, refrain from self-hardening plasticine with polystyrene balls as long as it is puts his hands to his mouth).

  • Solution n ° 1 : buy plasticine clearly intended for little ones from 1 year old or from 2 years old. There are some from Crayola, SES Creative, Giotto be-bè, Play-Doh, etc. Check the indications on the boxes, these brands also manufacture plasticine for older children. And remember to wash the handcuffs after use.
  • Solution n ° 2 : make dough yourself! Combine two cups of flour, one cup of salt and the water needed to make the consistency of pizza dough. If it sticks to your fingers, add more flour. Then divide the dough into several small “buns”, and color them with cocoa, paprika, curry or finger paint.

To keep the dough for about a month, add two drops of oil during your preparation, and place everything in the fridge in a freezer bag after each use. Another recipe, even simpler, intended this time for children under 2 years old: make a ball of bread crumbs, lightly wet and mix. That’s it, it’s ready: you can give this paste to your baby to handle. Thanks to you, your babbling king will become an expert in kneading, crushing and “patting”!

Innovative modeling clay

  • Nibbling play dough

Sarah and her little sister Luisa, two German children, gave Stefan, their dad a funny idea: to invent a plasticine to nibble from 3 years old, the “Yummy Dough”. In each box, a sterile syringe and four sachets of dehydrated food preparation composed of wheat flour and starch, sugar, powdered egg, palm oil, milk proteins, flavors, colorings , etc. We pump precisely 15 ml of water using the syringe to rehydrate each bag of different color separately, stir quickly with a spoon and then immerse the hands in the preparation to obtain a texture of yellow plasticine, breathtakingly farting green, blue and red. We model what we want, we put in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes and… to the table! In writing, we tested by making and baking a “carrot pie”. Not really delicious, but edible and… great fun! • The “Ludidou”, lighter than a marshmallow

The smiling Ok-Sun Yoo set up her small plasticine company in Limoges, but it was at the “Paris Toy Fair 2010”, where she was awarded, that we met her. On her stand in the “springboard for young talents” area, she exhibits the only modeling clay that she currently sells: the “Ludidou”, entirely white and extremely light. Ok-Sun opens a jar of this elaborate cellulose-based paste, takes a piece of it, scribbles two-three lines with a bright pink highlighter and kneads until obtaining a pastel pink ball. It works with any felt tip pen, any children’s paint and it won’t stain your hands. Creative and “sweet” to the sight and to the touch: we love it! From 3 years old.
