When you need help: the School of Kindred Care opened in Moscow

A serious illness comes to the family without an invitation and, first of all, places a psychological burden on the relatives and friends of the sick person. It is the relatives who take care of the sick on their shoulders. This is exhausting work that requires outside help. In Moscow, assistance to those in need of assistance is already provided by a system of support for family and long-term care, developed by experts from the capital’s social services.

From January 24, the project starts working in Moscow “School of Kindred Care”, designed to help organize home care for a sick person who has lost the ability to move independently or at least basicly serve himself.

Powerlessness in the face of circumstances, unfortunately, is well known to relatives of bedridden disabled people, elderly people with limited mobility and people suffering from dementia. But not only them. The habitual way of life of each family member collapses even in less difficult situations.

The task of the School of Related Care is to teach the basics of caring for a loved one who, due to illness, finds himself in a dependent position. However, the possibilities of care also affect the psychological sphere.

“People are often faced with the need to care for a loved one who has lost the ability to self-service. But not everyone is mentally prepared for such changes. In such cases, it is important for a person to receive the necessary information and knowledge in a timely manner in order to rebuild his life and his loved ones. The Nursing School will help train a person in specialized care for relatives in eight areas,” said Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Moscow Mayor for Social Development.

The essence of the classes within the framework of the project is comprehensive support for families who find themselves face to face with trouble. In addition to teaching the basics of proper patient care, the school’s activities are aimed at creating comfortable and safe conditions in the home, psychologically correct building communications within the family, creating conditions that reduce the risk of emotional burnout of family members who have devoted themselves to caring for a loved one.

Training courses for non-professionals are a real opportunity to help those who need it. In Russia, schools of this type are not new, but the Moscow project is unique in its own way: the training takes place in an online format, which allows you to get the necessary skills and information without leaving your home.

“As a rule, caring for a sedentary or weakened person requires a lot of time. Therefore, people caring for him most often do not have the opportunity to attend courses in person, where they could be taught proper care and at the same time help to establish mutual understanding and comfortable relationships within the family. The School of Related Care includes free online education,” says Anastasia Rakova.

If you feel trapped in the day-to-day care of a loved one or doubt that you are doing everything right, distance learning at the School of Related Care is the right choice.

How to get involved in the learning process?

  1. Take a survey on the website of the Department of Labor and Social Protection of the Population and find out what kind of care assistance your loved one needs.

  2. Fill out the form – after that, a link to the online course will be sent to your email address.

  3. Start studying at any time convenient for you.

The residents of the city who have completed the training course are further contacted by long-term care trainers – specialists from the district city social service centers. The trainers will answer the questions that have arisen during the training and explain how to put the acquired knowledge into practice. When necessary, specialists help to draw up an individual program for the rehabilitation and habilitation of disabled people.
