What “inedible” parts of food can be deliciously cooked

Stems, leaves and peel are considered to be food waste, despite the fact that they also contain substances useful for the body. Some food scraps can be used in the preparation of meals.

Potato peel

Potato peelings most often go to the trash can, although it is in the peel of this root crop that a large amount of nutrients are concentrated. Soaking the potato skins and washing them thoroughly can make crispy chips – just roll the slices in spices and salt, add oil, and bake in the oven until golden brown.

Apple peel

Apple peel is a source of vitamins and microelements, therefore, before adding apples to baked goods, it is advisable to leave it on the fruit. This healthy peel can also be used to make hot compotes and tinctures, preserves or jellies.

 

Citrus peel

Citrus fruit peel is a valuable part of food, a source of vitamin A, enzymes and nutritional fiber. Dry citrus peels and add to make aromatic, healthy drinks. It can also be mixed with berries, honey and fruits and there are candied fruits for dessert.

White cabbage stalks

There are not so many lovers of raw cabbage stalk. And if you cook it, then surely everyone will like it. Steam them for 10 minutes, then fry in a pan with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper. This side dish is a great source of nutritious fiber.

Carrot tops

Carrot tops contain 500 times more vitamins and minerals than the pulp itself. It is also considered a valuable source of protein and active ingredients. The tops can be used in salads, having previously doused it with boiling water, or in salsa where its taste will be completely invisible.

Artichoke leaves

For cooking, use the core of the artichokes, and the top leaves are sent to the trash can. And absolutely in vain – healthy and nutritious leaves can be blanched and baked with olive oil in the oven, and served with low-fat sauce.

Broccoli leaves

Not everyone likes broccoli, and even the leaves of this cabbage – and even more so. However, they contain a large supply of vitamin A and antioxidants that slow down the aging process. Broccoli leaves can be cooked in the same way as fruits – boiled, fried and served with meat or fish.
