Viagra: what are the effects and how to take it?

Drug indicated in erectile dysfunction in adult men, Viagra can only be obtained with a prescription. Prescribed after a medical consultation, the one commonly known as the “blue pill”, requires some precautions to be taken to use it properly and to avoid unwanted side effects. Discover in this article all our advice and explanations.

What is Viagra?

This is a medicine to be taken by mouth and the active substance of which is Sildenafil. Marketed since the late 90s, Viagra facilitates the flow of blood into the penis by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase E5). This enzyme is responsible for breaking down the cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) molecule which relaxes blood vessels and smooth muscle fiber. The erection is then possible and maintained thanks to the effects of the drug.

In which cases can viagra be prescribed?

A man can suffer from erectile dysfunction at any age. Viagra, also known as Sildenafil Citrate, is prescribed from the age of 18 by a doctor who can determine whether the use of the drug is necessary and whether erectile problems are not a sign of another pathology. A psychological evaluation will usually be performed by the attending physician or sex therapist to assess whether the problems can be resolved without the help of the blue pill.

Note that Viagra is a prescribed treatment for recurring erectile problems. An occasional intake to compensate for a simple sexual breakdown or in the hope of boosting its performance is strongly discouraged.

The possible causes of impotence are numerous:

  • A psychological problem such as stress or a recent shock. Therapeutic support can then be offered to adult men in parallel with drug treatment;
  • A testosterone deficiency;
  • Alcohol consumption ;
  • Tobacco consumption;
  • Drug use;
  • Age;
  • Taking a treatment that may have deleterious effects on erectile function.

When and how to take it

Viagra has the effect of facilitating and improving erection during sexual arousal. It is therefore recommended to take it about an hour before sex, on an empty stomach or with food. The maximum frequency of use is one daily dose. If the dosage is not respected, the impact on the patient’s health can be serious.

How long does the effect of the drug last?

The estimated duration of Viagra is 4 to 5 hours during which the erection will be facilitated, if the man is in a situation of excitement. In some cases, taking the medicine can cause a prolonged and painful erection. It is therefore recommended to stop taking Viagra and to consult your doctor quickly in order to adapt the treatment.

Side effects and contraindications

Prescribed only after medical advice, Viagra can cause several side effects including:

  • A headache ;
  • Dizziness ;
  • Hypersensitivity to light or blurred vision;
  • Redness in the face;
  • Digestive problems;
  • Heart problems such as hypertension, hypotension or cardiac arrhythmias which require prompt consultation with a healthcare professional.

Taking the drug is contraindicated if:

  • You are on medication for cardiovascular pathologies;
  • You suffer from heart disease or cardiovascular fragility;
  • You have recently had a Cerebrovascular Accident (stroke).

Viagra without a prescription, be careful!

Buying Viagra over the Internet through sites not approved by the National Order of Pharmacists may be dangerous for the user. The main risk is taking a drug in the wrong dosage, cut with other substances and therefore dangerous for health.
