It happened – after many months of distance learning at first, and then the summer break, the children and teachers returned to school. The return to traditional education during the coronavirus pandemic raises doubts not only among parents, but also among teaching staff. A high school teacher wrote to our editorial office. What is he afraid of?

Coronavirus: Difficult Return to Normal Learning

We publish the teacher’s letter below in full:

I have read and listened to many opinions of the so-called experts from both the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Health and others on the subject of returning students to schools. I am a high school teacher. I have the impression that people who do not have an elementary idea of school reality speak mainly.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep your distance both inside and outside the classroom. The average class in a Polish school is about 30 people, and the classrooms are so large that even if the class consisted of 15 people, it would not be feasible to place students at a distance of at least 1,5 meters from each other. Corridors and cloakrooms have such a capacity that the distance in their area is also impossible to achieve. Calling for its preservation has the same meaning as calling for Neptune that there should be no storms on the seas and oceans.

Many secondary schools (and not only) do not meet the basic principles of health and safety. If the workers in industrial plants were ordered to function in the conditions in which students and teachers spend several hours a day, strikes would break out and the plants would close. For example, due to the reform and the double year, many schools converted rooms without basic ventilation to classrooms. On the other hand, heating often works in such a way that in winter it is impossible to bear without opening the windows, because there is no regulation of the heating level in the rooms. In summer, in turn, it is like in saunas.

There is one upstairs toilet for several dozen teachers plus staff.

You have to enter the store wearing a mask and often one at a time. The representative of the Ministry of Health calls for the avoidance of large clusters of people. But in schools we are supposed to spend 5-8 hours at the same time with several hundred other people without any security except … washing hands! This is crazy. One infection will freeze the entire school, and then thousands of people from the families of students and teachers in quarantine. What will children and parents suffer more from – distance learning, public access to the coronavirus vaccine, or total paralysis of social life resulting from the above-mentioned situation?

The most distressing thing is reading about the constant RECOMMENDATIONS and APPEALS. We hear all the time: “you should”, “you should think”, etc. There were several months for that. SENSE, FORWARDING decisions and actions had to be taken. And not to experiment on people.
